BUCHAREST (AP) ― Radamel Falcao scored twice, Diego had a goal and Atletico Madrid defeated Athletic Bilbao 3-0 in an all-Spanish final Wednesday night to win the Europa League for the second time in three seasons.

Falcao scored in the seventh and 34th minutes, giving him 29 goals in 29 games over two seasons in Europe’s second-tier club competition. Diego added a goal in the 85th.

Bayern Munich hosts Chelsea on May 19 in the final of the Champions League, Europe’s top club competition.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone got the better of his former mentor Marcelo Bielsa. Simeone played for Argentina when Bielsa was the national team coach.

Atletico, which beat Fulham in the final two years ago, won its last 12 matches in this season’s competition.

Atletico dominated the final before 52,347 mostly Spanish fans, who were hard to distinguish since each team’s colors are red and white. Bilbao, being the “away” team, wore green shirts.

Falcao scored the first goal after through ball from Diego. Defender Fernando Amorebieta slipped, and Falcao curled a left-footed shot inside the far post at the upper right corner.

Brazilian senate OKs bill

SAO PAULO (AP) ― The Brazilian senate has approved a bill giving FIFA the guarantees needed to organize the 2014 World Cup.

The approval came just a day after the Brazilian government met with FIFA officials in Switzerland to discuss the country’s preparations and resolve their differences.

The bill will go before Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, who is expected to sign it in the coming days.

Congress’ lower house passed the bill in March after several delays, especially over the sale of alcohol inside stadiums ― currently against the law but a FIFA demand because Budweiser is a major World Cup sponsor.

The approved legislation doesn’t specifically authorize alcohol sales, but the government says other articles in the proposed law will allow Brazil to fulfill all of FIFA’s requirements.

Rooney’s horse finishes last

CHESTER, England (AP) ― Wayne Rooney’s successes on the soccer field have yet to transfer to the race course.

The Manchester United striker endured a miserable debut as a racehorse owner when his colt finished last in its first race on Wednesday.

Two-year-old Pippy was always near the rear after a slow start and he never got into the race, which was run on rain-softened ground at Chester in northwest England.

The horse is jointly owned by Rooney and wife Coleen, who both were on hand to watch the Manor House Stables Lily Agnes Stakes.
