Swiss police on alert after 'panther' sighting

Police in western Switzerland have warned hikers to be on the lookout for a large black cat resembling a panther.

Authorities have received reports of several sightings of the animal in woods near the town of Solothurn over the past week.

Cantonal (state) police say attempts to capture or photograph the animal using special traps have so far failed.

In a statement Tuesday, police said the creature appears to be afraid of humans but hikers should ``act with caution and avoid approaching the unknown animal unnecessarily.''

Police say they are investigating whether there is a link to panther sightings in southern Germany last year.

Authorities say no Swiss zoos or circuses have reported missing panthers, which aren't native to Europe. (AP)

스위스 중서부 지역 경찰은 8일 흑표범과 유사한 대형 고양잇과 동물이 이 지역에서 목격되고 있다며 등산객들에 주의를 당부 했다.

당국은 최근 몇주 동안 베른 북부 졸로투른 인근 숲에서 흑표범처럼 생긴 동물이 여러 차례 발견됐다는 보고를 접수했다고 밝혔다.

졸로투른 칸톤(州) 경찰은 특수한 덫을 설치해 미확인 동물을 생포하려 하는 한편 종류를 식별하기 위해 사진 촬영을 시도했으나, 아직까지 성공하지 못했다.

경찰은 이날 성명을 통해 "이 동물이 사람을 두려워하는 것 같기는 하지만, 등산객들은 주의해야 하며 불필요하게 종류 미상의 야생동물에 다가가서는 안된다"고 경고했다.

경찰은 현재 스위스 국내 동물원이나 서커스단에서 표범이 실종됐다는 신고는 없었다며, 이 동물이 지난해 독일 남부지방에서 발견된 흑표범과 연관이 있는지도 조사 중이라고 덧붙였다.
