Japanese woman kidnapped, sexually assaulted in Sydney

A man was in custody on Thursday after he allegedly kidnapped, handcuffed and repeatedly sexually assaulted a Japanese woman, reportedly a tourist, in Sydney.

Chief Inspector Rick Johnson told reporters the victim, 29, got to know the man after arriving in Australia in January. She travelled around the country and met up with him again on Tuesday.

It was then that her ordeal began.

"The offender made a number of advances to the victim. When she resisted she was detained by some form of bondage method, by tying her up," Johnson told state broadcaster ABC.

Handcuffs were used and the man then allegedly repeatedly sexually assaulted her, a police statement said.

The woman told police she escaped by climbing out of a window when she was untied to use the toilet.

"She was obviously very distressed but very willing to provide police with all the information that they required," Johnson said.

The man, 48, has been charged with three counts of aggravated sexual assault and one count of kidnapping. (AFP)

25일 호주 언론에 따르면 지난 23일 0시30분께 시드니 중앙역을 출발해 록데일로 향하던 기차 안에서 10대 6명이 중국인 유학생 2명에게 심한 인종차별적 언사와 함께 무차별적인 폭행을 가했다.

10대들은 기차가 록데일 역에 이르렀을 무렵 갑자기 자리에 앉아있던 중국인 유학생들에게 달려들어 "아시아 X들" 등의 인종차별적 욕설을 퍼부으며 마구 폭행했다.

이에 앞서 지난 17일에는 20대 일본인 여성 관광객이 호주에 머무는 동안 친구로 지내자며 접근한 호주 남성에게 납치, 감금돼 성폭행 당한 사건이 발생했다.

지난달 22일에는 시드니 시내 한복판에서 길가던 한국 여성이 괴한에게 방화 테러를 당하는 사건이 발생, 충격을 던졌다.

현지 경찰은 원한 관계에 의한 사건일 가능성이 있는 것으로 보고 수사를 벌이고 있지만 사건 발생 한 달이 지나도록 이렇다 할 단서조차 잡지 못하고 있다.

이처럼 아시아인을 상대로 한 강력 범죄가 잇따르자 호주 이민자 사회에서는 호주에 뿌리깊은 인종차별 정서가 여전히 사라지지 않고 있는 증거라며 우려를 표시했다.

시드니대 유학생인 김정석(22) 씨는 "악명높은 백호주의가 오래 전에 폐기됐다 고는 하지만 많은 호주 백인들의 의식 속에는 여전히 인종차별적 정서가 뿌리 깊이 남아있는 것 같다"며 "과연 시드니가 안전한 도시인가에 대해 많은 회의가 든다"고 말했다.
