Mysterious space microbes ‘munching’ ISS

Russian scientists said that 76 types of micro-organisms have been causing “severe damage” to the International Space Station, according to Interfax news agency and other local news reports.

“We had these problems on the old MIR space station, now we have them on the ISS. The microflora is attacking the station. These organisms corrode metals and polymers and can cause equipment to fail,” Anatoly Grigoryev, the vice-president of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

On MIR, dozens of microbes were detected. Mutated microbes soon became aggressive, eating away glass and metal, and posing serious threat.

Bacteria also could also threaten the crew, as it can multiply rapidly in controlled environment of the station.

Grigoryev said rampant bacteria “can cause infectious diseases among the crew.”

국제우주정거장(ISS)에서 설비문제를 일으킬 수 있는 76종류의 미생물체가 발견됐다고 러시아 인터팍스 통신 등 현지 언론이 보도했다.

러시아 과학아카데미 부원장 아나톨리 그리고리예프는 "이 미생물체는 금속뿐 아니라 (고무나 플라스틱 같은) 폴리머 재질도 갉아 먹는다"며 "이들이 기계 고장의 원인이 될 수 있다"고 우려를 표시했다.

이같은 사실은 학자들이 ISS 러시아 섹터에서 미생물 표본을 수집하는 실험을 하는 과정에서 확인됐다.

그리고리예프는 ISS에서의 실험 결과 이 미생물체는 열린 우주공간에서 31개월 이상 생존하는 것으로 판명됐다고 설명했다.

그는 "미생물체는 (러시아가 1986~2001년까지 운영했던) 국제우주정거장 '미르'에서도 문제가 됐었다"고 덧붙였다.

과거 미르에서는 수십 종류의 미생물들이 발견됐는데 이들은 유리나 금속류를 먹어치워 심각한 위험을 야기했다.

그리고리예프는 통제된 환경이라는 특성상 우주정거장 내에 박테리아가 창궐에 전염병을 일으킬 수도 있다고 설명했다.

1998년부터 건설에 들어간 ISS는 2020년까지 임무를 수행한 뒤 폐기처분될 예정이다.
