Venus and Jupiter cuddling up in night sky

It's not too late to catch the spectacular Venus and Jupiter show.

On Monday and Tuesday evenings, the planets will appear just 3 degrees apart in the western sky. The gap has been narrowing since last month.

The two planets are visible every night at twilight. Venus is brighter because of its relative closeness, compared with super-far-away Jupiter.

Even though the gap will widen, the planets will appear remarkably close all week and be easily visible the rest of this month. So says astronomer Tony Phillips, author of the spaceweather.com website. Grab a small telescope, and you can also catch Jupiter's four largest moons.

Astronomers consider it the best evening tag-up of Venus and Jupiter in years. In July, early-risers will be treated to a similar spectacle, in the eastern sky at daybreak. Phillips says throw in the crescent moon, and it ``will be worth waking up for.'' (AP)

"금성과 목성의 '포옹' 장관 펼쳐진다"

금성과 목성이 나란히 맞닿아 마치 포옹 을 하는 듯한 진풍경이 이틀간 밤하늘에 펼쳐진다.

천문학자들은 12∼14일(현지시각) 밤하늘이 청명할 경우 금성과 목성이 손가락 두 개 간격 정도, 엄밀히 말해 3도가량 떨어진 채 맞닿아 있는 현상을 석양이 질 무렵부터 관측할 수 있다고 12일 밝혔다. 두 행성은 실제로는 우주 공간에서 서로 매우 멀리 떨어져 있다.

스카이앤텔레스콥(Sky & Telescope)지에 따르면, 두 행성 중 더 밝게 보일 행성 은 금성이다. 목성이 금성보다 2배 이상 크긴 하지만, 금성은 거리상 매우 멀리 떨어져 있는 목성에 비해 상대적으로 지구에 훨씬 가까워 목성보다 50배나 많은 태양 빛을 받기 때문이다.

천문학자 토니 필립스는 "실제로는 매우 멀리 떨어져 있음에도 두 행성은 아주 가깝게 위치한 듯 보일 것"이라며 "이달 말까지 육안으로도 쉽게 관측이 가능하다"고 전했다. 망원경을 이용하면 목성의 4대 위성들도 관측할 수 있다.

이달 25~26일 사이에는 초승달이 가세해 목성과 금성에 차례로 살며시 맞닿는 또 하나의 장관이 펼쳐지는데, 특히 미 북부에서 생생히 관측할 수 있다.

이달 14일 이후에는 목성의 위치가 점점 낮아지다가 내달 중순이 되면 해가 지고 난 뒤엔 시야에서 완전히 사라진다.

오는 7월에도 동틀 무렵 일찍 일어나면 서쪽 하늘에서 비슷한 장관을 초승달과 함께 감상할 수 있다.
