U.S. Police wound hostage-taker at Korean bank

A siege at a Southern California bank ended Thursday when police shot and wounded a gunman who was holding the manager hostage.

The bank manager was rescued without injury, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Investigators were unsure late Thursday whether the man entered the Sachan Bank in Buena Park to rob it or took the manager hostage for personal reasons. Both are of Korean descent.

The suspect was shot at about 11 a.m. PST when he left the building to pick up something police had brought and left outside for him. He was being treated Thursday night at the trauma center at the University of California at Irvine.

Sgt. Bill Kohanek described the gunman as uncooperative with police negotiators and said he sounded "like a very angry person." But he said the man did allow customers and bank employees other than the manager to leave when police requested it. (UPI)

지난 1일 (현지시간) 미국 캘리포니아 주 오렌지카운티 부에나파크의 한인 은행에서 인질극을 벌인 김명재(55)씨는 범행 당시 사제 폭탄까지 갖고 있었던 것으로 밝혀졌다.

3일 지역 언론에 따르면 김 씨를 체포한 경찰은 김 씨의 옷에서 사제 폭탄 1개를 발견했고 인질극으로 벌인 새한은행 플러턴 지점 객장 안에서도 사제 폭탄 3개를 찾아냈다.

경찰은 김씨가 총신을 자른 샷건(shotgun)과 사제폭탄을 준비하는 등 처음부터 인질극을 벌일 목적으로 은행에 찾아간 것으로 보이며 최악의 경우 폭탄을 터트려 인질을 살해하고 자살할 의도도 있었던 것으로 추정된다고 설명했다.

김 씨가 소지한 사제 폭탄은 파이프를 잘라 속에 폭약을 채운 형태로 알려졌으나 자세한 제조 경위 등은 밝혀지지 않았다.

지점장 권모(여)씨를 인질로 잡고 있던 범인 김 씨는 또 경찰에게 25만 달러를 주면 권 씨를 풀어주겠다고 말도 했던 것으로 드러났다.

범인 김 씨는 지난 2007년 권 씨가 지점장으로 재직하던 다른 한인 은행 대여 금고에 보관했던 현금 24만 달러가 없어졌다며 5년 동안 권 씨에게 보상을 요구해왔다.
