KT Corp. said Monday that it showcased its Long Term Evolution femtocell, a one-chip solution that combines the central processing unit and modem functionality, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
Dubbed the finest technology being operated on the firm’s internet infrastructure, it is expected to guarantee voice quality not only indoors but also in underground areas, according to KT officials.
Femtocell is a small base station which targets improving network connections for small indoor spaces like restaurants and cafes.
The femtocell, which is exhibited at the Connected House section of the world’s largest mobile fair, has been developed together with KT’s in-house System on Chip technology and is capable of handling call-processing and authentication requests, its officials said.
“It is a small, low-power and a low-cost solution that can easily and quickly be scaled up in LTE roll-outs,” a KT official said.
The development of femtocell comes as it is forecast to play a bigger role in the fourth generation network LTE market in an effort to upgrade service quality, said KT officials.
Femtocells will be installed in high-density regions, as well as key commercial areas, beginning in the latter half of this year, its officials said.
“We will provide the kind of top-notch LTE communications network service that consumers want through the additional installation of LTE femtocell for hotspots of data usage, as well as areas where coverage could be unstable,” said Kim Sung-man, senior executive vice president of network business unit at KT.
