The United States military’s technology division is pushing to use “battlefield illusions” to confuse enemy troops, Britain’s Daily Mail reported Wednesday.

The new project by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency works like existing measures that distract radar systems. The difference is that it works on people instead of machines, causing audio and visual hallucinations. By studying how the brain processes sensory input, DARPA said it aims to “demonstrate and assess the operational effectiveness of advanced human-deceptive technologies on military ground, sea, and airborne systems,” the Daily Mail reported.

The technology, which is likely to be optical, will probably be loaded on vehicles.

It’s not the first time scientists have tried to develop sense-deceiving technology that fools enemies.

In the ’50s, American and British forces mulled the use of “weaponized” hallucinogens like LSD and BZ in battles.

During the earlier stages of war on terror, many supported the idea of a “Voice of God” weapon which would direct the simulated voice of “Allah” toward jihadis, telling them not to commit suicide attacks.

In September 2011 it was reported that arms developer BAE Systems had developed an “invisibility cloak” allowing a vehicle to blend into its surroundings.
