Faith-healer father's children found dead

Three children were found dead in South Korea Saturday after their faith-healing father, a Christian pastor, attempted to treat their illnesses only with prayers, police said.

The bodies of the children, aged 10, eight and five years old, were found by their relatives at their home next to the pastor's church in the southern county of Boseong, a detective at Boseong Police Station told AFP.

"They were apparently suffering from infections that went untreated for a long time as the father was only praying for them instead of seeking medical treatment," he said.

The 43-year-old pastor's fourth child, a year-old baby, was taken in protective custody by police, the detective said, adding the father was under questioning. (AFP)

전남 보성경찰서는 보성읍의 한 교회를 운영 중인 박모(43)씨와 조모(34.여)씨 부부는 감기에 걸린 자녀를 치료하지 않고 폭행한 사실을 확인했다고 12일 밝혔다.

경찰에 따르면 박씨 부부는 지난 1일 감기를 앓던 큰딸(10)과 각각 8살, 5살 난 아들 등 3남매를 잡귀가 붙어 있으니 몰아내야 한다며 이틀간 허리띠와 파리채로 때 리는 등 가혹행위를 한 것으로 수사결과 드러났다.

이들은 성경책 잠언 24장13∼14절 '아이를 훈계하지 아니하려고 하지 말라 채찍 으로 그를 때릴지라도 그가 죽지 아니하리라. 네가 그를 채찍으로 때리면 그의 영혼 을 스올에서 구원하리라'는 구절 등을 따라 했다고 경찰은 설명했다.

경찰은 이 부부가 아이들의 병을 낫게 하려고 금식기도를 했다는 진술에 따라 영양결핍이나 다른 합병증에 따라 숨졌을 가능성도 있다고 보고 수사를 하고 있다.

경찰은 정확한 사인을 밝히고자 이날 오후 국립과학수사연구원에 부검을 의뢰했 으며, 결과에 따라 박씨 부부를 유기치사 혐의로 구속영장을 신청할 방침이다.

박씨는 목사 안수를 받지 않고 보성읍에서 작은 교회를 운영 중이며, 감기를 앓 던 3남매를 치료하지 않고 숨지자 이를 방치한 혐의를 받고 있다. (연합뉴스)
