Supporters of Ahn Cheol-soo are set to form a “fan club” to support his political career, though the entrepreneur-turned-professor has not yet confirmed his stance on the issue.
The organization titled “Nacheolsoo,” an abbreviation for the Korean catchphrase, “my dream, Cheol-soo’s dream, many people’s dream,” will hold its inauguration ceremony Thursday morning, officials said Tuesday.
The event is to take place at the Korea Press Foundation building, where the press conference for Ahn’s charity foundation was held Monday.
The group will be more than a mere supporters’ club and will act as the presidential potential’s policy think tank, officials said.
“Based on feedback from the social network services plane, we will also work to devise social and political policies,” said one of the initiators of Nacheolsoo.
“We will also send letters to Ahn to urge him to make up his mind and step out as a presidential candidate.”
Some 1,000 people have so far volunteered to join the organization, which will exclude former lawmakers.
Ahn and his aides, however, stressed that they have nothing to do with the club.
“Nacheolsoo is in no way related to professor Ahn or his donation foundation,” said one of his close aides.
“I hope that people are not misled by this organization or its alleged purposes.”
Some also worried that Ahn’s name may be abused for political fund-raising projects.
Ahn’s plans for a charitable foundation got a boost as close colleague Park Kyung-chul pledged on his Twitter on Wednesday to donate 10 percent of his current assets and future income.
Ahn has been touted as a potential political figure since last year when he considered running in the Seoul mayoral by-election.
After he gave way to Park Won-soon, the former computer anti-virus program developer has been regarded as a strong rival to the conservative runner Rep. Park Geun-hye in the year-end presidential race.
