Two dead, six injured in explosion at coal mine

TAEBAEK (Yonhap News) -- A gas explosion at a coal mine has killed two people and injured six others, police said Saturday.

   The blast occurred at around 8 p.m. on Friday when nine miners were working at a site about 970 meters deep or 3,400 meters from the entrance, police officer Chang Jae-koo said.

   He said the wounded are being treated for carbon monoxide poisoning at nearby hospitals in Taebaek, some 250 kilometers southeast of Seoul. Two of them were transferred to a special hospital in Seoul for treatment of burns, according to hospital officials.

   Chang said police investigators questioned the ninth miner who was not injured and walked out of the mine by himself.

   An investigation is under way to determine the exact cause of the accident, Chang added, but they could not access to the site as toxic gas still remains inside the pit.

   Taebaek was once the largest mining city in South Korea with 44 mines, though the number has now dwindled to just two, as the country has shifted toward imported oil as an energy source, according to Kim Dae-jin, an official of Taebaek Coal Museum.

장성광업소 사고 9명 사상..경찰 과실 여부 조사

(태백=연합뉴스) 배연호 이재현 기자 = 지난 3일 태백 장성광업소 안전사고로 광부 2명이 숨지고 7명이 다친 가운데 경찰 등이 사고 원인에 대한 본격 수사에 나 섰다.

강원 태백경찰서는 "사고가 난 광업소 관계자를 불러 갱내 안전규정 준수와 과 실 여부 등을 조사하고 있다"고 4일 밝혔다.

경찰에 따르면 이 사고는 지난 3일 오후 8시께 태백시 장성동 장성광업소의 갱 구 내 수직 방향 975m 지점 폭 4.4m, 높이 2.9m의 지하 탄광 막장에서 발생했다.

이 사고로 유지원(54ㆍ기관차 운전원)씨와 조호연(56ㆍ채탄보조원)씨 등 광원 2 명이 유독가스에 질식해 숨졌다.

또 최병태(57ㆍ채탄원)씨 등 6명이 다쳐 인근 병원으로 옮겨져 치료 중이며, 이 원희(51)씨는 치료 후 귀가했다.

이들은 지난 3일 오후 4시에 근무 교대한 후 밀폐된 공간에서 채탄작업 중이었 다.

경찰은 안전사고 피해 광원 중 일부가 얼굴과 팔 등에 화상을 입은 점으로 미뤄 소규모 폭발 때문에 '후(後)가스'가 발생, 일산화탄소 등 유독가스에 질식했을 가능 성이 큰 것으로 보고 수사를 벌이고 있다.

특히 경찰은 갱내 가스 분출이 많아 '갑종 탄광'으로 분류된 장성광업소 측이 폭발 또는 질식사고의 원인이 된 갱내 가연성 가스를 왜 사전에 검출하지 못했는지 등 과실 여부를 집중적으로 조사할 방침이다.

담당 경찰관은 "현재 갱내에 유독가스가 남아 있어 사고 현장 접근이 안 되고 있다"며 "지식경제부 동부광산보안사무소와 광업진흥공사 등과 합동 현장조사를 벌 일 계획"이라고 밝혔다.

이에 광업소 측은 "최근 갱내에 가스 분출이 검측되지 않았다"며 "채탄원 각자 휴대용 가스 검침기를 가지고 있으나 순식간에 분출되는 가연성 가스는 사전에 검측 하기 어렵다"고 말했다.
