S. Korean couple recalls 30 hours trapped in wrecked ship

A South Korean honeymoon couple who survived a fatal cruise ship accident in Italy on Monday recounted their panic-filled 30 hours spent trapped inside the darkened and upended ship.

"We slipped into the corridor as water began to rise in our cabin. We then shouted ourselves hoarse calling for help and blew the whistles attached to our life jackets," said Han Gi-deok, a 29-year-old schoolteacher, in an interview with Yonhap News Agency.

"We subsisted on a few bits of cookies and water, worrying that we may be trapped there for a long time," said Han's 29-year-old wife, Jeong Hye-jin, who also is a teacher.

The couple were rescued on Sunday morning after the luxury cruise Costa Concordia struck a rock and keeled over in shallow waters late Friday off Italy's Tuscan coast with more than 3,000 passengers and 1,000 crewmembers aboard.

At least five people died and more than a dozen are still missing, according to media reports.

The couple said they had not sensed the shipwreck at first because they had taken a nap just after dinner.

"It was only after we woke up that we realized the ship was titling," Han said. "We went out to the corridor but ended up slipping toward the end of the corridor and even were injured from the steep incline," Han said.

The couple then returned to the dark cabin with no power, taking turns wearing an extra life jacket over their own life jackets to endure chilly winter wind blowing into the cabin through window cracks.

Fortunately, the water stopped rising inside the cabin, Han recalled. "We encouraged each other, promising to live a good life together if we escape."

The two hung on 30 hours till rescue forces arrived, consuming bits of cookies and water.

"Since we were in complete darkness with no electricity inside the ship, we could only distinguish night and day through a ray of light coming from a small hole on the wall of the cabin," Jeong said.

When rescuers eventually found them at around 1 a.m. Sunday, Jeong recalled that it was like meeting a hero.

The two were the last among the 34 South Korean passengers rescued from the ship.

Jeong said she wants to go on another honeymoon trip to replace the one ruined by the disaster, but added, "I do not want to go on another cruise." (Yonhap News)

한씨 부부는 저녁 식사를 마치고 객실로 돌아가 잠깐 잠이 드는 바람에 사고 사실을 전혀 눈치 채지 못했다.

한씨는 "잠에서 깨어보니 배가 기울어 있었다"며 "복도로 빠져나갔지만 경사가 너무 심해 복도 끝까지 미끄러져 다치기도 했다"고 말했다.

두 사람은 창문 틈으로 새어 들어오는 매서운 겨울 바다의 바람을 견디기 위해 각자 입은 구명조끼 위에 여벌로 주운 구명조끼 1개를 번갈아가며 입었다.

한씨는 "배가 기울어진 뒤 물이 더이상 차오르지 않아서 살아날 수 있을 것 같다는 희망을 가질 수 있었다"며 "여기서 빠져나가면 배려하면서 잘 살자는 얘기를 하면서 서로를 격려했다"고 말했다.

외부와 차단된 두 사람은 객실에 있던 약간의 과자와 물로 30시간을 견뎌냈다.

부인 정씨는 "배 안에 전기가 전혀 들어오지 않고 완전히 깜깜해서 객실 작은 구 멍으로 들어오는 빛을 보고 밤낮을 구별했다"며 "오래 버텨야 할지도 모른다는 생각 에 쿠키 한두 조각과 물 딱 두 모금만 먹었다"고 말했다.

마침내 사고 발생 30시간 만인 15일 0시30분께 구조대가 한씨 부부를 발견했고, 1시간30분에 걸친 출입문 해체 작업끝에 구출해냈다.

정씨는 "구조대가 우리를 발견했을 때 너무 반가워서 짧은 영어로 `thank you for coming'이라고 인사했다"며 "구세주를 만난 것 같았다"고 구출 당시의 감격을 전했다.

정씨는 사고로 망친 신혼여행을 다시 가고 싶지만 "크루즈는 가고 싶지 않다"고 덧붙였다.

경기도의 중학교와 고등학교에서 각각 물리와 수학을 가르치는 부부교사인 두 사람은 지난 7일 결혼해 유럽에서 신혼여행을 즐기다 사고 유람선에 탑승했고, 한국 국적의 승객 34명 중에서 마지막으로 구출됐다.

두 사람은 인터뷰 내내 서로의 손을 단단히 잡고 놓지 않았다.
