Korea paroles 762 prisoners for Christmas celebration

The government will release 762 prisoners in a special parole in celebration of this year's upcoming Christmas, the Justice Ministry said Thursday.

They will be allowed to go home at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, the last working day before Christmas, the ministry said.

Those to be released include a Malaysian woman who is raising a 13-month-old son behind bars as well as Shin Jung-hwan, a singer and entertainer who was imprisoned in June for illegal gambling abroad.

They are mostly convicts of economic offenses or exemplary inmates, according to the ministry.

Inmates whose terms in prison exceed two-thirds of their sentence are entitled to apply for special paroles on national days, including the Aug. 15 National Liberation Day marking Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule in 1945.

'모범수' 신정환, 성탄절에 가석방

법무부는 성탄절을 맞아 서민경제사범을 중심으 로 한 모범수형자 등 762명을 23일 오전 10시 가석방한다고 22일 밝혔다.

가석방 대상자는 징역 10년 이상의 장기수형자 49명, 환자 및 70세 이상 고령자 40명, 소년수 8명, 모범수형자 665명이다.

이 중에는 교정시설에서 생후 13개월의 남아를 양육하고 있는 말레이시아 여성 도 포함됐다고 법무부는 설명했다.

억대 해외 원정도박을 한 혐의로 기소돼 지난 6월 1심에서 징역 8월을 선고받고 복역 중인 방송인 신정환(36)도 가석방된다. 신정환은 지난 8월 항소심에서도 징역 8월을 받았다.

법무부 관계자는 "수형자들이 일정한 형 집행률에 도달하면 가석방을 신청할 수 있다"며 "연예인이라고 해서 허가된 것은 아니다"라고 말했다. 형법에 따르면 형기의 3분의 1을 채운 유기징역 수형자는 가석방을 신청할 수 있다.

성폭력사범은 국민의 법 감정을 고려해 배제됐다.
