Mother gets 7 yrs in prison for beating adoptive infant

SEOUL, Dec. 15 (Yonhap) -- A Seoul court on Thursday sentenced the adoptive mother of an infant to seven years in prison for frequently beating the baby girl, causing brain death.

The 28-year-old mother, identified only by her surname Lee, was indicted in September on charges of habitually beating her three-month-old daughter after illegally adopting her. The girl is now brain dead.

Lee, who had worked for a nursery school, decided to adopt the baby in August upon an impulsive desire to raise a daughter as she had two biological sons, according to investigators.

Lee could not qualify for a legal adoption due to her financial difficulties, investigators said.

"Even after registering the birth of the adoptive baby, Lee had battered her without a reason, which deserves heavy punishment," Kim Hak-jun, presiding judge of the Seoul Southern District Court said.

Lee did not elaborate on the motive behind the beatings, but said she got upset that people said the baby girl resembled her father.

서울남부지법 형사11부(부장판사 김학준)는 불법 입양한 여자아이를 상습구타해 뇌사에 이르게 한 혐의(중상해 등)로 기소된 이모(28ㆍ여)씨에 대해 징역 7년을 선고했다고 15일 밝혔다.

재판부는 “생후 3개월짜리 갓난아이를 입양해 출생신고까지 하고서는 이유없이 상습적으로 구타해 생명을 위태롭게 하는 등 죄질이 불량해 엄중한 처벌이 불가피하다”고 판시했다.

이씨는 지난 8월 6일 인터넷 포털사이트를 통해 갓난아이를 입양한 뒤 두달에 걸쳐 상습 구타해 뇌사에 이르게 한 혐의로 구속기소됐다.

전직 어린이집 보육교사였던 이씨는 보증금 500만원짜리 4평 크기 단칸방에 남편의 월급 180만원으로 생활하는 등 입양 자격이 없었던 것으로 조사됐다.

또한 두 아들이 있으면서도 이 씨는 딸을 키우고 싶은 마음에 2009년 8월에도 불법으로 신생아를 입양한 뒤 친자식인 것처럼 허위로 출생신고를 한 적이 있는 것으로 드러났다.

이 씨는 주변에서 “아이가 아빠를 닮았다”는 얘기를 들으면서 구타하게 됐다고 조사과정에서 진술한 것으로 알려졌다.
