LS Cable & System Ltd., Korea’s leading maker of electrical wiring, said Monday it has established a laboratory for its research and development programs in China.

Located in Wuhan in central China, the facility will develop ultra-high-voltage cables and products for special applications including mining and wind turbines, the company said.

“We’re planning to set up an institute with secured top-notch, comprehensive R&D capabilities in the global power distribution and communications industry by 2015 by cooperating with our existing lab in Korea,” LS said in a statement.
The Chinese market for electrical wiring and communications networks has been rapidly growing on the back of consistent demand for infrastructure projects.

Officials noted that the laboratory has recruited talent from universities in the region, where the firm’s local unit is also located.

They are also planing joint research projects with adjacent Chinese think tanks dedicated to electro-technology, which could facilitate the certification process for applications.

“The new R&D center will provide us with a chance to take a leap forward in the Chinese market,” said Jeon Seung-ik, chief of the laboratory.

“We’ll introduce localized products based on world-class R&D capabilities.”
