Samsung Electronics Co., the world’s top TV maker, said Tuesday that it has scrapped its plan to develop 3D TVs with RealD Inc. amid lingering uncertainties in the global TV market.

A Samsung spokesman said that the company is no longer pursuing the development of the active shutter 3D TVs in a deal that was announced earlier this year with RealD, a 3D technology licensor based in California in the United States.

Samsung Electronics plans is focusing on development and production of active shutter glass technology for its 3D TV business, amid heightened competition with rivals such as LG Electronics Inc. to standardize 3D technology.

The remarks from Samsung confirm earlier reports by Bloomberg and Reuters that RealD retracted its original plan to ship 3D TVs early next year with Samsung.

RealD is seeking other TV partners for its 3D display technology, the company said last week, according to media reports.

Samsung’s move comes as the global TV market continues to grapple with weak consumer electronics demand in developed regions and lackluster sales of high-end TV models, such as 3-D TVs and Web-connected TVs.
