Korean pitcher Park Chan-ho released by Japanese club Orix

South Korean baseball pitcher Park Chan-ho has been released by his Japanese cub Orix Buffaloes.

The Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) club announced Monday that Park, 38, will not be retained for next season. The right-hander joined the Buffaloes before the 2011 season on a one-year deal.

The former Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Star pitched only seven games for the Japanese club, and none after June, going 1-5 with an earned run average (ERA) of 4.29. He dealt with assorted injuries all season.

Park is the first South Korean to play in the majors. In 17 years with seven different MLB clubs, Park won 124 games, the most ever by an Asian pitcher in the majors, and put up a 4.36 ERA.

His best seasons came with the Los Angeles Dodgers, his first club. From 1997 to 2001, Park averaged 15 wins a season, including his career-best 18 wins in 2000. After his lone All-Star selection in 2001, Park signed a lucrative free agent deal with the Texas Rangers, worth $65 million over five seasons. But he was hampered by injuries during his two and a half years in Texas, and his days as a frontline starting pitcher were effectively over by 2005.

Park became a free agent after the 2010 season but didn't generate much interest. He said he joined the Orix club since it offered him a chance to start. He had spent the majority of his final four years in the majors as a relief pitcher.

He was teammates with South Korean slugger Lee Seung-yeop on the Buffaloes, but Lee announced last week he would return to South Korea's Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) for next year, after a disappointing season of his own. Lee had previously played for the KBO's Samsung Lions before bolting for Japan before the 2004 season, and is expected to re-join the Lions. Park has never played professionally in South Korea, and in order to join the KBO, he will have to enter the draft in August next year.

일본프로야구 오릭스, 박찬호 방출

올해 일본프로야구에 도전했으나 신통치 못한 성적으로 시즌을 마친 '코리언 특급' 박찬호(38)가 결국 소속팀에서 방출됐다.

오릭스 버펄로스는 24일 공식홈페이지를 통해 "박찬호 등 3명의 선수에게 재계 약하지 않겠다는 뜻을 통보했다"고 발표했다.

이로써 박찬호는 짧았던 오릭스 구단과의 인연을 마감했다.

지난해까지 메이저리그에서만 17년을 뛰면서 역대 아시아 선수 최다인 124승과 평균자책점 4.36을 기록한 박찬호는 선수 인생의 황혼기를 맞으면서 종착역을 고민 하다가 지난해 12월 일본 진출을 선택했다.

일본프로야구에서도 이만한 메이저리그 경력을 갖춘 선수가 드물었던 터라 박찬 호의 오릭스 입단 소식은 일본에서도 큰 반향을 불러일으켰다.

게다가 대표팀에서 한솥밥을 먹기로 했던 '거포' 이승엽(35)이 함께 입단하면서 '야구 한류'를 이끌 것이라는 기대를 높였다.

그러나 최소 두자릿수 승리를 장담하며 일본에 진출한 박찬호는 시즌을 시작하 기 전부터 메이저리그와 다른 보크 규정에 적응하지 못하는 등 불안한 모습을 보였 다.

4월 데뷔전에서 6⅔이닝 3실점으로 패전 투수가 되며 쉽지 않은 '신고식'을 치 른 박찬호는 이후 6차례 더 출장했으나 성적이 들쭉날쭉해 믿음을 심어 주지 못했다 .

2군을 오가며 어려운 시즌을 보내던 박찬호는 여름 들어 허벅지 부상 등이 겹쳐 6월 이후로는 아예 1군 경기에 모습을 드러내지도 못했다.

올 시즌 고작 7경기를 뛰면서 거둔 성적은 1승5패와 평균자책점 4.29로 초라하 다.

오릭스에서 방출된 박찬호의 향후 거취는 아직 불투명한 상태다.

박찬호가 한국프로야구에 합류하려면 내년 8월 한국야구위원회(KBO)가 주관하는 2013년 신인 드래프트에 나서야 한다.

하지만 내년이면 한국 나이로 불혹에 이르는 박찬호가 선수생활을 이어갈지는 불확실하다.

한편 박찬호에 앞서 올 시즌 6번 타자로 뛰었던 이승엽까지 한국으로 떠나보낸 오릭스는 또 다른 한국인 거포 이대호(29)에 관심을 보이는 것으로 알려져 관심을 모은다.

올 시즌을 마치고 자유계약선수(FA) 자격을 얻는 이대호는 수비에서 허점을 보 이지만 지명타자 제도가 있는 퍼시픽리그에서는 타격 재능을 선보일 수 있다.

올해 이승엽을 데려왔으나 전력상 큰 재미를 보지 못했던 오릭스는 이대호가 가 세한다면 주포 T-오카다와 함께 강력한 중심 타선을 만들 수 있다.

이미 일본 언론에서는 지난 7월부터 오릭스를 비롯한 일본 구단들이 이대호에게 눈독을 들이고 있다는 보도가 여러 차례 나온 바 있다.
