Lawyer-turned-activist wins opposition-bloc ticket for Seoul mayoral race

Lawyer-turned-activist Park Won-soon was picked as the unified opposition-bloc candidate to run in the upcoming Seoul mayoral by-election.

The founder of the People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy, a major civic activist group, had been a front-runner in a series of public polls since he received endorsement from popular software entrepreneur, Ahn Chul-soo early last month.

Park is expected to compete with Rep. Na Kyung-won of the conservative ruling Grand National Party (GNP) in the Oct. 26 race.

The post of Seoul mayor has been vacant since Oh Se-hoon of the GNP stepped down in August after losing a referendum he called to oppose a free school lunch program supported by the opposition-led city council. (Yonhap News)

야권의 10ㆍ26 서울시장 보선 단일 후보로 시민사회 박원순 후보가 선출됐다.

박 후보는 3일 서울 장충체육관에서 열린 서울시장 야권단일후보 선출 국민참여경선에서 민주당 박영선 후보를 누르고 야권 단일 후보로 확정됐다.

박원순 후보는 경선 결과 최종 득표율 52.15%를 기록하면서 45.57%를 얻은 박영선 후보를 크게 앞서며 서울시장 선거 본선행 티켓을 획득했다.

민주노동당 최규엽 후보는 2.28%를 얻는데 그쳤다.

경선 득표율은 일반 시민 여론조사(30%), TV토론후 배심원 평가(30%), 국민참여경선(40%)를 합산하는 방식으로 이뤄졌다.

앞서 지난달 30일 공개된 배심원단 평가에서도 박원순 후보는 54.4%의 지지로 박영선 후보(44.1%)에 10.3% 포인트 앞선 바 있다.
