Ahn Cheol-soo, a potential dark-horse candidate for Seoul mayor, is far ahead of other possible contenders from both the ruling and opposition parties, multiple surveys showed Monday.

Ahn, a former doctor, rose to fame in the 1990s after establishing Ahnlab Inc., one of South Korea's best-known anti-virus software firms. He has been reported to be considering a run for mayor as an independent candidate.

On Friday he strongly hinted that he may run in October's by-election, saying that he has distanced himself from politics so far because one lawmaker cannot make any difference, but he believes "there are lots of things a mayor can change."

Ahn, now dean of the Graduate School of Convergence Science and Technology at Seoul National University, is widely popular, especially among young Koreans, due in part to his clean image. His sudden emergence has put major political parties on edge.

Attesting to his popularity, a series of surveys showed Monday that the 50-year-old Ahn has a commanding lead over other possible candidates from the ruling Grand National Party and the main opposition Democratic Party.

A JoongAng Ilbo survey, conducted by Gallup Korea on Saturday, showed that Ahn has 39.5 percent support among 1,006 Seoul citizens. Trailing him were two female politicians -- Rep. Na Kyung-won of the GNP with 13 percent and the nation's first female prime minister, Han Myeong-sook of the DP, with 10.9 percent.

Though Ahn has not yet officially announced his candidacy, his close aides say if he chooses to run he would do so as an independent with no party affiliation, in line with his efforts to keep a distance from the unpopular political establishment.

Another survey, commissioned by the daily Kookmin Ilbo and conducted by GH Korea on 500 Seoul residents over the weekend, also showed that Ahn has 36.7 percent support, far ahead of Na with 17.3 percent and Han with 12.8 percent.

The Seoul mayoralty was vacated late last month when conservative mayor Oh Se-hoon stepped down after failing to block an opposition-led free school lunch program in the city's first-ever referendum.

By law, the Seoul mayoral election is set for Oct. 26.

안철수의 독주, 서울 시장 보선 지지율 1위

안철수 서울대 융합과학기술대학원장이 10ㆍ26 서울시장 보궐선거 여론조사에서 압도적 선두를 달리는 것으로 나타났다.

여야 후보가 아직 확정되지 않아 예비후보군들을 대상으로 벌인 여론조사이기는 하지만 안 원장이 모든 연령층과 지역에서 고른 지지를 기반으로 여야 지지층을 `블랙홀'처럼 흡수하는 것으로 나타나 여야의 선거전략에 전면 수정이 불가피할 것으로 보인다. 중앙일보가 지난 3일 한국갤럽에 의뢰해 서울시민 1천6명을 상대로 실시한 여론조사에서 안 원장이 39.5%의 지지율로 1위를 차지했다.

2위인 한나라당 나경원 최고위원(13.0%)이나 3위인 한명숙 전 국무총리(10.9%) 보다 세배 이상 높았다.

정운찬 전 국무총리(3.6%), 박원순 희망제작소 상임이사(3.0%), 민주당 박영선 정책위의장(1.1%) 등은 한자릿대 지지율에 그쳤다.

같은 날 국민일보가 GH코리아에 의뢰, 서울지역 유권자 500명을 대상으로 벌인 여론조사에서도 안 원장이 36.7%의 지지율로 2위인 나 최고위원(17.3%)을 압도했다.

한 전 총리는 12.8%로 3위를 기록했다.

MBC라디오의 `손석희의 시선집중'도 지난 4일 리얼미터를 통해 서울지역 성인 남녀 1천명을 설문한 결과에서도 안 원장이 37.4%의 지지율로 공동 2위인 나 최고위원 한 전 총리(14.2%)를 크게 앞섰다고 5일 밝혔다.

이어 맹형규 행정안전부장관(5.7%), 박 정책위위장(3.7%), 정 전 총리(3.3%), 박 상임이사(2.1%) 순이었다.

무엇보다 안 원장은 연령과 지역을 불문하고 고른 지지를 받아 여야 모두 마땅한 `적수'를 내놓기 어려운 상황이다.

중앙일보-한국갤럽 조사에서 안 원장의 지지율은 20대에서 무려 57.8%에 달했고 , 한나라당에 우호적인 것으로 평가되는 50대에서도 29.4%의 지지를 받아 나 최고위원(21.2%)에 앞섰다.

또 민주당 지지층에서 34.8%, 한나라당 지지층에서 30.9%가 안 원장을 지지한다 고 밝혀 안 원장이 여야 지지층을 상당부분 흡수할 것으로 조사됐다.

국민일보-GH코리아 조사에서는 안 원장이 서울 전역에서 다른 후보에 앞섰고 강 남 4구(서초ㆍ강남ㆍ송파ㆍ강동)에서는 안 원장의 지지율이 62.9%로 월등히 높았다.
