Professor wanted for leading gang, drug ring

BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — A university professor suspected of leading a motorcycle gang and methamphetamine drug ring is wanted for arrest in California, authorities said Thursday.

Steve Kinzey, 43, believed to be the president of the local chapter of the Devils Diciples motorcycle club, has been the target of a 6-month narcotics and weapons trafficking investigation, sheriff's spokeswoman Jodi Miller said.

Kinzey has been an associate professor of kinesiology at California State University, San Bernardino for nearly 10 years. University president Albert K. Karnig said in a statement that the campus would assist in the investigation "to help assure that all the facts are accurate."

"If the allegations are indeed true, this is beyond disappointing," Karnig said.

Authorities said the probe stemmed from a federal undercover operation of another biker gang, the Mongols, in which Kinzey was identified as being involved in criminal activity.

During a raid at his Highland home last week, investigators seized more than a pound of methamphetamine, rifles, handguns, body armor, leather biker vests and other biker paraphernalia and evidence of his involvement with the Devils Diciples. Investigators believed that Kinzey received large amounts of methamphetamine from a supplier and distributed the drug to a network of dealers, Miller said.

Police also found an undisclosed amount of cash at the house and said all the guns recovered were unregistered, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"To have an associate professor who is a member of the Devils Diciples and allegedly dealing methamphetamine is quite alarming. I mean, it's unusual to say the least," Sheriff Rod Hoops said.

Kinzey's live-in girlfriend, 33-year-old Holly Robinson, and six others suspects were arrested on drug-related charges. They included Jeremy Disney, 30, of San Bernardino, who is suspected of supplying Kinzey with the drugs.

Robinson, who is believed to be a member of Devils Diciples, was arrested on suspicion of drug and weapon possession and participating in the drug ring. A call to the home she shares with Kinzey went unanswered.

Authorities are searching for three other suspects.

캘리포니아주 샌버나디노 카운티 경찰은 캘리포니아주립 샌버나디노 대학 운동생리학 교수 스티븐 킨제이(43)가 지역 갱단을 이끌고 있는 것으로 밝혀져 지명 수배했다고 2일 (현지시간) 발표했다.

경찰은 오토바이를 타고 마약을 팔던 일당을 체포해 조사하는 과정에서 킨제이가 두목이라는 사실을 포착해냈고 킨제이의 집을 급습해 수만 달러 어치의 히로뽕과 현금, 소총, 권총, 방탄복, 그리고 오토바이를 탈 때 입는 가죽 조끼 등을 찾아냈다.

찾아낸 총기는 모두 등록이 안 된 불법 무기였다.

경찰이 들이닥칠 때 집에 없었던 킨제이는 도주했으며 현재 총으로 무장한 것으로 보인다고 경찰은 말했다.

킨제이는 놓쳤지만 경찰은 킨제이의 동거녀 할리 로빈슨(33)을 붙잡았다.

2005년 캘리포니아주립 샌버나디노 대학을 졸업한 로빈슨은 히로뽕 제조와 판매를 맡은 '동업자'라고 경찰은 설명했다.

샌버나디노 경찰은 6개월 전부터 연방수사국(FBI)과 함께 이 지역에서 히로뽕이 널리 유통되고 있다는 첩보를 입수하고 은밀하게 수사를 벌여 킨제이가 이끄는 마약 조직을 일당타진할 수 있었다.

디트로이트 웨인 대학을 졸업하고 인디애나주립대에서 석사 학위를 받은 뒤 오하이오주 톨리도 대학에서 박사 과정을 마친 킨제이는 10년 전부터 샌버나디노 대학에서 교수로 재직해왔다.

이혼한 전처 사이에 15살 난 딸이 있는 킨제이는 평소 다정하고 조용한 사람으로 알려졌었다.

킨제이의 정체가 밝혀지자 대학과 가족, 이웃들은 경악했다.

미시간주에 사는 아버지 행크 킨제이는 "내 아들이 그럴 리 없다"면서 "독실한 기독교인이고 담배도 술도 입에 대지 않는데다 딸에게도 아주 다정한 아빠"라고 말했다.

이웃들도 믿기지 않는다는 반응이다. 이름을 밝히지 않은 이웃은 "그는 아주 조용하고 점잖은 사람이었다"고 말했다.

샌버나디노 대학 앨버트 카니그 총장은 "사실이라면 정말 실망스러운 일"이라면서 "대학당국은 경찰에 최대한 협조하겠다"는 성명을 내놨다.
