Woman arrested for pretending to be pregnant

A 30-year-old woman was booked without detention on Wednesday after she pretended to be pregnant to steal household goods, the police said.

The woman surnamed Lee left a mall in Daegu without paying for 900,000 won ($880) worth of household items.

When a security guard stopped her, Lee said that she had lost her receipts. She slipped out of the mall arguing that she was pregnant, saying: “Are you going to take responsibility if something goes wrong with my baby?”

The police was able to identify and arrest her using CCTV footage and her license plate.

대구 북부경찰서는 31일 대형소매점에서 물건값 을 내지 않으려고 임신부 행세를 한 혐의(절도)로 이모(32.여)씨를 불구속입건했다.

이씨는 지난 24일 오후 3시30분께 대구 북구의 한 대형마트에서 원두 커피믹스 등 90여만원 어치의 생활용품을 카트에 담은 뒤 돈을 내지 않고 매장을 나오다가 보 안요원 제지를 받자 '영수증을 분실해 계산할걸 증명할 수 없다.

"내가 임신부인데 아기가 잘못되면 책임질거냐"고 따지며 빠져나간 혐의를 받고 있다.

경찰은 이씨를 뒤따라가서 차량번호를 확인한 보안요원 신고를 받고 매장 내 폐 쇄회로(CC)TV 화면 검색을 통해 용의자를 물색, 이 여성을 검거했다. (연합뉴스)
