Korean gunned down in Mexico City

MEXICO CITY (Yonhap News) – An employee of a South Korean conglomerate was gunned down by unknown assailants in downtown Mexico City, corporate and consulate sources said Friday.

The unidentified victim who had worked for the local branch of a South Korean conglomerate was shot to death in an upper-class residential area on his way home from work on Thursday. The residential area, which has a sizable Korean population, had been largely untouched by the recent rise in violence in Mexico's capital.

Local police said witnesses reported seeing three men fire up to 13 rounds at the deceased, who was hit next to his car.

Investigators said that no valuables were stolen, and since the dead man was specifically targeted by the assailants, it may have been more than simple murder.

"The deceased had worked for the company for seven years and he was a conscientious employee," the head of the company's office, who declined to be identified, told authorities.

Related to the incident, the South Korean consulate in Mexico City said that it has contacted local law enforcement authorities to check the circumstances behind the shooting death.

The consulate has intensified efforts to protect Koreans living in Mexico from the rise in violence.

The latest death comes eight months after two Koreans were shot while riding in the same taxi together.

There were 32 violent crimes committed against Koreans in Mexico last year, including two murders.

멕시코서 韓대기업 직원 괴한총격으로 사망

(멕시코시티=연합뉴스) 한국 대기업 직원이 멕시코 수도 한복 판에서 괴한들의 총격으로 사망했다.

5일(이하 현지시간) 관계자들에 따르면 전날 오후 6시40분에서 8시 사이쯤 멕시 코시티 도심 주거지역인 폴랑코에서 한국 대기업인 D사 현지 법인에 근무하는 A(35) 씨가 괴한 3명이 쏜 총탄 13발 중 6발을 머리와 온몸에 맞아 현장에서 숨졌다.

A씨는 이날 회사에서 차량을 몰고 퇴근하다 약국에 들른 뒤 집에서 두 블록 정 도 떨어진 곳에서 변을 당했다.

목격자들은 A씨가 피격 당시 잠시 차를 세워놓고 뒤쪽 화물칸을 연 채로 서 있 다 차를 타고 뒤따라온 괴한들로부터 총격을 받았다고 전했다.

현지 경찰은 피해자에게서 사라진 금품이 없고, 총격이 무자비하게 이뤄진 점으 로 미뤄 단순 강도보다는 원한에 따른 표적 살해 가능성에 무게를 두고 조사를 벌이 고 있는 것으로 알려졌다.

A씨는 회사에서 인사 업무를 담당했던 것으로 전해졌다.

하지만 D사의 현지 법인장은 "A씨는 7년째 근무해 온 성실한 직원이었다"며 원한 관계에 의한 피해 가능성을 부인했다.

A씨가 숨진 폴랑코는 멕시코시티에서도 부촌으로 꼽히는 곳으로 '마약과의 전쟁 '으로 치안이 불안한 와중에서도 비교적 안전한 거주지역으로 인식되며 한국 동포 상당수가 거주하고 있는 곳이다.

조환복 주멕시코 대사는 "멕시코 검찰과 외교부에 동포 피해에 대한 깊은 우려 를 전달했다"며 "내일 멕시코시티 검찰총장을 만나 향후 수사방향 등 신속한 범인 검거를 당부할 계획"이라고 밝혔다.
