Korea’s leading automaker Hyundai Motor Co. said Wednesday that its executives will take part in a White House policy meeting aimed at improving the fuel economy of cars sold in the United States.

The company said Ron Bloom, senior counselor for manufacturing policy to President Barack Obama, and Gary Guzy, deputy director of the Office of Environmental Quality, will be present at the meeting scheduled for Wednesday (Washington time).

Three Hyundai executives from its Washington office and Detroit research center will attend the meeting, Hyundai said, without disclosing their names.

“The first-ever consultation meeting is significant as the U.S. government is moving to push forward the fuel efficiency of autos to help the environment,” a Hyundai spokesperson said. “Our participation in the meeting is a sign of Hyundai’s growing status in the U.S. market.”

The spokesperson said Hyundai is expected to be invited to similar gatherings in the future.

Washington wants to increase the fuel economy of cars sold in the country to 15 kilometers per liter of gasoline by 2016 and raise it further to 24 kilometers by 2025.
