More students in Australia choose Korean as school subject

The Korean Education Center, based in Sydney, said Friday that 5,758 students in Australia are learning Korean language as their school subject.

Only 3,030 students were learning Korean in 2009 but in just two years the number increased by 90 percent. In New South Wales, where most Korean expats live, the number doubled during the same period.

But it is apparently not due to more Korean expats studying in Australia. There are no Korean students taking their mother tongue classes in Queensland, the center said. And while there was a 51.1 percent increase in the number of Koreans taking Korean classes in New South Wales, that of other nationalities jumped by 117.8 percent.

The Korean Wave is becoming popular in Australia, mostly among Asian expats.

There are 15 elementary schools and seven high schools in New South Wales offering Korean classes, while Queensland has five and two each. Victoria also has four and two respectively.

The number is expected to continue growing, as the Australian government allocated about 62 million Australian dollars to promote education in Asian languages such as Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and Indonesian.

호주에서 한국어를 공부하는 초.중.고교생들이 급증하고 있다.

8일 시드니한국교육원(원장 조영운)에 따르면 올해 한국어를 선택해 공부하고 있는 호주의 각급학교 학생들은 모두 5천758명으로 집계됐다. 이는 2009년 3천30명에 비해 무려 90% 급증한 것이다.

특히 한국교민수가 가장 많은 최대주 뉴사우스웨일스주의 경우 한국어 선택 학생이 2천999명으로 2년 전보다 100%나 늘었다.

뉴사우스웨일스주에 이어 한국교민이 두 번째로 많은 퀸즐랜드주의 한국어 선택 학생 역시 1천396명으로 이 기간에 106.5% 급증, 8개 주 및 준주(準州)에서 증가율이 가장 높았다.

이런 현상은 한국계 학생의 한국어 선택보다는 비(非)한국계 학생들의 한국어 선택이 크게 늘어난 데 따른 것으로 분석됐다.

뉴사우스웨일스주의 경우 이 기간 한국계 학생의 한국어 선택은 887명으로 51.1% 늘어난 데 그친 반면 비한국계 학생들의 한국어 선택은 117.8%나 늘어 대조적이었다.

특히 퀸즐랜드주에서는 한국계 학생들의 한국어 선택은 전혀 없는 반면 비한국계 학생들만이 한국어를 선택한 것으로 파악됐다.

뉴사우스웨일스주에서 한국어 과정을 개설한 학교는 올해 현재 초등학교 15곳, 고교 7곳 등이다.

퀸즐랜드주의 경우에는 초등학교 5곳, 고교 2곳, 빅토리아주는 초등학교 4곳, 고교 2곳이 한국어 과정을 각각 개설해 두고 있다.

한국어 개설 학교수도 점차 증가하고 있는 추세다.

한국어 선택 학생 및 개설 학교수 증가는 호주 연방정부가 한국어를 비롯해 중국어와 일본어, 인도네시아어 등 4개 아시아권 언어 습득 학생들을 늘리기 위해 그동안 6천200만호주달러(약 682억원)의 예산을 투입한 데 영향을 받은 것으로 분석됐다.

조영운 원장은 “호주에서 중국계 등 아시아계 학생들 사이에 한국 드라마 시청, 한국 가요 청취 등 ‘한류’ 바람이 일고 있는 것도 한국어 선택자 급증 요인이 되고 있다”며 “시드니대 등 주요 대학에서도 한국어 수강생들이 크게 늘어나고 있는 추세”라고 말했다.

호주 재계는 “아시아는 세계에서 가장 빨리 성장하는 지역이면서 호주의 관문이기도 하다”면서 아시아권 언어 교육의 중요성을 강조하고 있다.
