An Irish couple murdered their spouses and disguised it to look like suicide. The shocking crime, which happened 20 years ago, came to the surface when one of the accomplices confessed his crime after feeling guilty following death of his son, reported the Daily Mail.

Mrs. Hazel Stewart, formally a Sunday school teacher, entered into an affair with Mr. Colin Howell, who was a dentist. Stewart even taught Howell's four children.

Howell visited her home occasionally to “teach” her how to play guitar. The relationship led to Stewart becoming pregnant, and they had to travel to London for abortion.

When their affair was revealed, Howell's wife attempted to suicide but survived. However, the tragic event inspired the plan for her murder. Howell killed his wife while she was sleeping with a hose connected to a car exhaust. Stewart also killed her husband by feeding him sleeping pills with his food.

Howell then moved the two bodies near his father in law’s home. After that, he made it to look as if they killed themselves.

The judge said that Stewart showed “little remorse” for what she had done. She was sentenced to 18 years. Howell was sentenced to 21 years last year.

이후 Howell씨는 Stewart씨의 남편이 집을 비울 때 기타를 가르친다는 빌미로 방문을 하는 등 부적절한 관계를 유지하였다. 나중에는 결국 런던으로가 몰래 낙태 수술을 받기도 했다.

얼마 뒤 불륜 사실이 들통나자 충격을 받은 치과의사 Howell씨의 부인은 자살을 시도했지만, 가까스로 목숨을 건졌다. 하지만 Howell씨는 이를 계기로 부인이 낮잠을 자는 동안 자동차 배출구를 호스로 연결하여 가스를 흡입하게 했다. 불륜녀 Stewart씨는 남편의 음식에 수면제를 넣고 잠이 들었을 때 이같은 방법으로 살해하였다.

치과의사인 Howell씨는 그 뒤 부인의 귀중품 등을 챙기고 외갓집 차고로 사체 2구를 옮겼다. 그리고 차고 안으로 가스를 삽입하여 마치 둘이서 같이 자살한 것처럼 보이도록 위장하였다.

이에 대해 법원은 반성의 기미도 보이지 않는 Stewart씨에 대해 징역 18년을 선고하였다. 한편 범행을 자백한 치과의사 Howell씨는 작년 21년형을 선고 받은 바 있다.
