Chinese gymnastics judge faces discipline over disputed Asiad gold

The global governing body of gymnastics has opened disciplinary proceedings against a Chinese judge for altering scores to help a Chinese athlete share a gold medal with a South Korean gymnast at last year's Asian Games.

The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) said Wednesday the judge Bin Shao, who was only supposed to evaluate the difficulty of routines on the "D" panel, modified an execution score for China's Zhang Chenglong in the men's floor event at the Asian Games in Guangzhou, southern China. The FIG said Bin altered the score prior to its release but failed to inform either the head execution judge or the superior jury.

As a result, Zhang ended up sharing the gold with Kim Soo-myun of South Korea.

"Mr. Bin committed this act upon his own initiative and with complete disregard for the rules in force," FIG said in a statement, adding the judge's attitude was "wholly unacceptable."

In artistic gymnastics, there are two judges who determine the difficulty of the routine and award a D-score, and four judges for execution who give an E-score.

The D-score is open ended and judges can add points based on the difficulty of required elements. The E-score has a base score of 10.0 and judges deduct points for mistakes.

In Guangzhou, Kim earned a 6.600 D-score, 0.2 more than Zhang.

Despite a relatively clean routine, Kim earned an 8.800 E-score, while Zhang scored a 9.000.

Kim Dae-won, a senior official at the Korea Gymnastic Association who served as a judge in Guangzhou, recalled that Adrian Stoica, head of the men's technical committee at FIG, reprimanded Bin for the scoring change, and the event had to be stopped for several minutes.

"The Asian Games ended quietly anyway, but FIG had been quite upset over Bin's violation," Kim said. "I think the latest measure is an extension of that."

Kim said he found the FIG decision rather unusual.

"Most FIG judges are European and the Asian Games are run by the Asian Gymnastics Union," he said. "So the FIG didn't take much interest in the Asiads."

China won all but one of the gold medals in artistic gymnastics in Guangzhou. South Korean Yang Hak-seon prevented the sweep by taking the men's vault.

국제체조연맹(FIG)이 지난해 광저우 아시안게임 남자 기계체조에서 점수를 조작해 자국 선수가 금메달을 따도록 도와준 중국 심판을 징계하는 절차에 들어갔다.

국제체조연맹은 광저우 아시안게임 당시 남자 마루 종목에서 점수를 고쳐 제출 한 중국 심판 샤오빈을 상벌위원회에 회부했다고 AP통신이 17일 보도했다.

남녀 기계체조 각 종목은 연기의 기술 난도를 보는 D 심판(2명)과 연기의 실수 여부를 보는 E 심판(4명) 6명으로 이뤄진다.

남자 마루운동 D 심판이던 샤오빈은 난도 점수가 아닌 연기 실기 점수에 간여해 중국 선수 장청룽의 점수를 바꾸면서 이 사실을 감독관에게 보고하지 않고 최종 점 수를 발표해 문제를 일으켰다고 FIG는 설명했다.

그 결과 장청룽은 한국의 김수면(25·포스코건설)과 공동 금메달을 땄다.

김수면의 난도 점수는 6.600점으로 6.400점인 장청룽보다 0.2점 높았지만 큰 실 수가 없었는데도 연기점수는 장청룽(9.000점)보다 0.200점 낮은 8.800점에 그쳤고 결국 합계에서 동률을 이뤘다.

FIG는 장청룽이 김수면과 동점을 받도록 샤오빈이 연기점수를 높였다고 판단하고 있다.

FIG는 "샤오빈이 심판 규정을 어겼고 이는 심각한 위법행위"라고 밝혔다.

이에 대해 심판으로 아시안게임에 참가했던 김대원 대한체조협회 전무는 "당시 감독관인 아드리안 스토이카 FIG 기술위원장이 샤오빈을 불러 호되게 야단쳤고 경기 가 5분 이상 중단됐었다"고 말했다.

이어 "대화가 잘 마무리됐지만 샤오빈이 절차를 무시한 것에 대해 FIG의 감정이 많이 상했고 이번 조치는 그 연장선상에서 이뤄진 것"이라고 말했다.

김수면이 공동 금메달을 획득하는 데 그친 것에 대해 김 전무는 "감독관이 없을 때는 D 심판이 E 점수까지 결정해왔던 게 그간의 관례"라며 큰 문제는 아니라는 입 장을 나타냈다.

김 전무는 "FIG 심판들은 주로 유럽인들이고, '경쟁'보다 '축제'로 치러온 아시 안게임은 아시아체조연맹 주관이라 FIG는 큰 관심을 두지 않았다"며 FIG의 이번 조 치가 이례적이라고 덧붙였다.
