Samsung Group, South Korea's largest business conglomerate, said Tuesday that it has donated 100 million yen ($1.22 million) to help Japan's earthquake relief.

   In addition to the donation, the group will dispatch 10 rescue workers from Samsung Rescue Corps. and 11 medical workers from the Samsung Medical Center after consulting with the Japanese government, it said in a statement.

   The group will also send 2,000 rescue kits with the Korea National Red Cross to the neighborhood country where a 9.0-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami wrecked havoc on villages last Friday on its northeastern coast.

   Top executives of Samsung Electronics Co., the group's flagship unit, sent condolence letters to their Japanese business partners, the company said.

   "We are very shocked and saddened by the earthquake news in Japan. We hope that the employees and the families are safe, and we will fully cooperate so that the recovery efforts can take place as soon as possible," said the letter signed by Samsung's vice chairman Choi Gee-sung and president Lee Jae-yong.

   Samsung's founding family has been keeping personal and economic ties with Japan. Lee Kun-hee, chairman of Samsung Electronics and the group founder's son, is a graduate of Waseda University in Japan and has long seen Japanese electronics makers as business models. 삼성이 일본의 지진피해 복구와 재건을 돕기 위해 일본삼성을 통해 1억엔(약 14억원)을 전달키로 했다. 또 적십자와 공동으로 구호세트 제공, 인명구조단 ‘3119구조대’ 및 의료 자원봉사단 파견 등의 지원 방안을 시행키로 했다.

삼성 관계자는 15일 “도요타는 최근 피해복구 성금 3억엔을 내놨다”며 “이에따라 지원금액을 결정했으며, 구조단 등 모든 수단을 동원해 일본을 돕겠다는 방침”이라고 말했다.

삼성은 담요ㆍ내의 등 보온용품, 세면도구 등 생활용품이 포함된 구호세트 2000개를 지원키로 했다. 또 자체 운영중인 인명구조단인 3119구조대 10명과 삼성의료원을 중심으로 한 의료봉사단 11명을 일본 정부와 협의가 끝나는 대로 피해지역에 즉시 파견키로 했다.

이에 앞서 지난 13일에는 최지성 부회장과 이재용 사장 공동명의로 일본 주요 거래업체에 위로서한을 보내 종업원과 가족의 무사함을 기원하고 적극적인 피해 복구 지원을 약속했다.

삼성에 이어 현대차, SK, 롯데 등 여타 그룹들도 1억원 수준에서 곧 위로금 전달 계획을 발표할 것으로 알려졌다.

한편 일본에 파견된 한국 긴급구조단도 대지진과 쓰나미로 큰 피해를 입은 일본 도호쿠(東北)지역의 센다이시 가모지구에서 15일 이날 아침 7시부터 현지 경찰과 함께 수색 작업에 나섰다. 가모지구는 이런 센다이시 중에서도 피해가 가장 극심했던 지구라는 게 관계자들의 설명이다.
