Samsung develops new faster mobile DRAM

Samsung Electronics Co., the world's No. 2 semiconductor maker, said Monday that it has developed a new memory chip for mobile gadgets that can transfer data at a speed eight times faster than previous devices.

The WIDE IO mobile dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chip can transfer data at a speed of 12.8 gigabyte per second, compared with 1.6 gigabyte per second of previous devices, the company said in a statement.

The speed of the new mobile DRAM allows for the sending of two films and 3200 music files in one second, it added.

The new mobile DRAM also reduces power consumption by about 87 percent from the previous models, the Korean company said.

The new mobile chips are used to run multiple programs simultaneously on smartphones and tablet computers. (Yonhap News)

삼성전자는 21일 기존 모바일 D램보다 8배 빠른 차세대 '와이드 10 모바일 D램'을 개발했다고 밝혔다.

신제품은 50나노급 공정을 적용한 1기가비트 제품으로, 기존 모바일 D램의 전송 속도보다 8배 빠른 12.8GB/s(Giga Byte per Second)의 데이터 속도를 낸다. 이는 1초에 DVD급 영화 2편, 음악파일 3천200곡을 전송할 수 있는 속도다.

또 데이터 입출력 핀 수를 기존 32개보다 16배 많은 512개로 늘려, 초당 데이터 전송속도를 획기적으로 증가시켰다. 소비전력은 87% 절감했다.

회사측은 지난해 12월 4Gb LPDDR2 모바일 D램을 개발한 데 이어, 이번에 와이드 10 모바일 D램을 개발하로써 스마트폰 및 태블릿 PC고객에게 친환경 모바일 솔루션을 제공할 수 있게 됐다고 설명했다.

삼성전자는 내년부터는 20나노급 미세공정을 적용한 4Gb 제품을 본격 공급할 계획이다.
