The government of Haiti says at least 40 people have drowned when a bus overturned in a rain-swollen river east of the southern city of Jeremie.

A statement issued by the office of President Michel Martelly says about 60 people were on the bus when the driver attempted to cross the Glace River. Local Civil Protection officials have recovered the bodies of 40 people and are still searching the area. The statement said nine people were either rescued from the submerged bus or managed to swim to safety.

The accident occurred Monday near the town of Pestel on Haiti’s southern peninsula. Marie Alta Jean-Baptiste, the director of Haiti’s office of civil protection, says the driver apparently ignored warnings not to try to cross the river. (AP)

아이티에서 버스가 불어난 강물에 휩쓸리면서 적어도 40명이 숨졌다고 아이티 정부가 19일 (현지시간) 밝혔다.

미셸 마르텔리 대통령실은 성명을 통해 아이티 남부 도시 제레미 인근 글레이스 강을 건너던 버스가 급류에 휩쓸리는 사고가 일어났다고 밝혔다.

버스에는 60여명이 타고 있었으며 구조대가 40구의 시신을 수습했으나 실종된 승객들도 많아 사망자는 더 늘어날 것으로 보인다.

구조대레 의해 구조되거나 스스로 헤엄쳐 빠져나온 생존자는 9명 뿐이다.

사고는 불어난 강물을 운전사가 무리하게 건너려다 일어났다고 경찰 관계자는 전했다. (연합뉴스)
