A fire that damaged Samsung Electronics' new flagship smartphone last month was caused by mishandling by the owner and had nothing to do with the device itself, the South Korean tech giant said Saturday.

Samsung, the world's largest mobile phone manufacturer, said it received confirmation from an independent fire investigation service in Britain that the incident involving the Galaxy S3 was not a mechanical problem of the popular smartphone.

The Fire Investigations U.K. LLP said after conducting thorough tests on the burnt smartphone owned by a person living in Ireland and several new Galaxy S3 phones, it found the device to be safe.

It said the damage caused was due to external causes and said the characteristics of the burn marks were similar to those involving a product put inside a microwave oven.

Related to the findings, experts speculated that the damage could have been caused when the owner tried to dry the device using a microwave oven.

Meanwhile, the person who originally claimed on the Internet that his Galaxy S3 exploded has fully retracted his allegations, and said the damage was caused by negligence. He stressed that his actions were not intentional.

'갤럭시S3' 발화 사건, 단순 해프닝으로 종결

지난달 20일 아일랜드에서 발생했던 '갤럭시S3'의 발화 사건이 단순 촌극으로 판명됐다.

삼성전자는 영국 조사기관 FIUK(Fire Investigations UK LLP)가 이 사건을 조사한 결과를 자사의 온라인 블로그 '삼성투모로우(http://samsungtomorrow.c

om)에 7일 게시했다.

FIUK는 문제가 발생한 갤럭시S3와  동일한 다수의 제품으로 시험한 결과 "(제품의 손상을 입힌 원인은) 제품 외부에서 가해진 열에 의한 것"이며 "제품 자체의  문제는 아니다"라고 결론을 내렸다.

이어 "제품에서 보이는 손상 흔적은 가정용 전자레인지에 의한 손상과 매우  유사하다"고 설명했다.

자신의 갤럭시S3에서 발화 사고가 일어났다고 신고한 사건 당사자도 이날 인터넷 게시판을 통해 "원래 발언을 철회하고 싶다"며 "휴대전화 손상은 물에서 전화기를 복구하려다가 발생한 것"이라고 말했다.

그는 "휴대전화는 외부 에너지에 의해 손상된 것으로 전화기 자체에는 아무  이상이 없었다"며 "고의로 한 행동은 아니었지만 어리석은 실수였다"고 덧붙였다.

이와 관련해 전문가들은 사건 당사자가 스마트폰을 말리려고 전자레인지를 이용한 것으로 추정하고 있다.

해당 소비자는 당초 지난달 20일 한 아일랜드 포털 사이트에 '갤럭시S3 폭발(GALAXY SIII Explodes)'이라는 글을 올려 "갤럭시S3를 충전하는 중에 갑자기 흰 연기와 불꽃이 일면서 굉음이 발생했다"며 "화면은 정상적으로 동작하지만 송수화 기능이 작동하지 않았다"고 주장한 바 있다.
