Police shot and killed a man they say lunged at them with a knife in a confrontation that began in Times Square and drew officers and spectators on a chase that ended with shots fired near one of New York's most heavily touristed areas.

The encounter played out Saturday around 3 p.m., when officers approached a 51-year-old man they say appeared to be smoking marijuana near West 44th Street and Seventh Avenue, in the heart of Times Square.

The man became agitated, pulled out an 28-centimeter knife and began to put a bandanna on his head, police said. He refused repeated orders to drop the weapon and began backing down the avenue, continuing for a number of blocks and drawing many officers into a slow-speed pursuit that took them south of Times Square.

According to the police account, officers pepper sprayed the man six times but he held onto the knife throughout the seven-block pursuit. At West 37th Street, he lunged at police and two officers shot him in the torso, police said. He was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital.

Witnesses recalled a chaotic scene in which some bystanders took cover, while others began following the procession down the avenue in an attempt to capture cellphone video of it. On video obtained by NY1 cable news station, a number of officers, guns drawn, can be seen pursuing the man as he appears to skip down Seventh Avenue.

“He was swinging at people as he ran,” Jobby Nogver, 17, told The New York Times. Nogver watched as police surrounded the man and fired. “I can't tell you how many shots,” he said.

Priscilla Rocha, a tourist from Brazil, was visiting Times Square with her husband when they saw the confrontation.

“I almost had a heart attack,” she told the Times. “Everyone started running.” (AP)

경찰이 도심 한복판에서 50대男 사살!

미국 뉴욕 맨해튼 타임스퀘어에서 지난 11일(현지시간) 대낮에 수많은 인파가 지켜보는 가운데 한 남성이 경찰의 총에 맞아 숨졌다.

뉴욕경찰(NYPD)은 이날 검문 중이던 경찰관을 칼로 찔러 상해를 입히고 주변을 위협한 다리우스 케네디(51)를 현장에서 사살했다.

경찰에 따르면 이날 오후 3시께 타임스퀘어 한복판에서 대마초를 피우고 있던 케네디는 경찰들이 다가가 말을 걸자 갑작스레 흥분해 길이 28cm의 칼을 빼들고 두건을 꺼내 머리에 둘렀다. 

케네디는 칼을 내려놓으라는 경찰의 지시를 무시한 채 그대로 칼을 휘두르며 인 파 속으로 뛰어들었고, 그대로 몇 분간 경찰의 추격전이 이어졌다.

이 과정에서 케네디가 자신을 막아서는 경찰관 1명의 상체를 칼로 찔렀고, 근처 에 있던 동료 경찰 2명이 즉각 발포했다.

몸통에 12발의 총상을 입은 케네디는 인근 병원으로 이송됐지만 숨졌다.

당시의 이 긴박한 상황은 이날 타임스퀘어를 찾았던 관광객과 시민의 휴대전화와 비디오 카메라 등에 고스란히 담겼다.  

브라질 관광객 링컨 로차는 "뉴욕을 여러 번 방문했지만 이런 광경은 처음"이라며 놀라움을 감추지 못했다.

케네디가 칼을 빼드는 순간을 옆에서 목격한 로차는 경찰이 총을 꺼내자 곧 이어질 상황을 직감하고 함께 있던 부인의 만류에도 카메라로 손을 뻗었다.

그는 "이런 장면을 목격한다면 누구나 같은 행동을 취했을 것"이라면서 "사살의 순간을 기록하고 싶었다"고 말했다.

실제 이날 뉴욕타임스를 비롯한 여러 현지언론의 웹사이트에는 각기 다른 버전의 영상이 등장해 당시의 '촬영 열기'를 짐작케했다.

미 남동부 사우스캐롤라이나주(州) 출신의 케네디는 과거에도 대마초 소지 등의 혐의로 십여 차례 체포된 전력이 있다고 경찰은 전했다. (연합뉴스)
