United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will visit South Korea next month while on home leave, a diplomatic source said Monday.

Ban’s visit is scheduled for Aug. 22 and he will stay here for six days, the source said. During his visit, the 69-year-old secretary-general will be with his mother who lives in Chungju, Ban’s hometown located 147 kilometers southeast of Seoul, according to the source.

Ban’s itinerary also includes attending the opening ceremony for an international boat game to be held in Chungju on Aug. 25 as well as delivering a speech at a forum hosted by Seoul’s foreign ministry on Aug. 26, the source added.

The local forum named Post-2015 is designed to establish future agendas following the 2015 expiration of the U.N.’s Millennium Development Goals, primarily intended to eradicate poverty, promote primary education and raise gender equality in the globe’s most vulnerable regions.

Ban’s forthcoming visit was planned as his home leave from the U.N. which allows and finances staff members’ travel to home countries once every two years. (Yonhap News)
