S. Korean footballer Park Ji-sung retires from international play

Park Ji-sung, who has represented South Korean football in each of the past three FIFA World Cups, announced his retirement from international play on Monday.

"It's been an infinite honor and a source of great pride for me to represent my country as a football player," Park said through a statement. "And I've enjoyed a lot of glory and happiness thanks to the love of the fans. But I've come to a difficult decision today to retire from the national team."

Park ended his 11-year international career a day after the South Korean team arrived home back from the Asian Cup in Doha, Qatar, where it finished third for the second straight tournament.

The midfielder for Manchester United in England served as the South Korean captain in Doha.

Park, 29, said he wanted to give young players a chance to develop. He pointed to Koo Ja-cheol, who led the Asian Cup with five goals at age 21; Ji Dong-won, the 19-year-old striker who scored four goals; and the 18-year-old winger Son Heung-min, who was named the top rookie of the first half of the ongoing season at the first-division German league called Bundesliga.

"As you saw at the Asian Cup, there are many young players with great potential and passion for the game," Park said. "And I think it behooves me as a veteran to let them have the opportunity to experience big matches."

박지성, 축구대표팀 은퇴 선언

'캡틴' 박지성(30.맨체스터 유나이티드)이 지난 11년 동안 가슴에 달아왔던 태극마크를 반납했다.

박지성은 31일 오전 11시 종로구 신문로 축구회관 5층 대회의실에서 열리는 기자회견에 앞서 보도자료를 통해 "오늘 날짜로 대표팀에서 은퇴하기로 했음을 조심스럽게 밝힌다"며 "국가를 대표해 축구 선수로 활동하는 것은 무한한 영광이며 자랑이 었다"고 밝혔다.

그는 이어 "팬 여러분의 사랑과 관심을 통해 축구 선수로서 많은 영광과 행복을 누렸다"며 "세대를 통해 후배들에게 좋은 기회를 주는 게 필요하다"고 덧붙였다.

이로써 지난 2000년 4월 5일 라오스와 아시안컵 1차 예선을 통해 처음 A매치 데 뷔전을 치렀던 박지성은 지난 26일 일본과 2011 아시안컵 준결승전을 통해 A매치 10 0경기를 채우고 '센추리 클럽' 가입의 영광을 맛보며 정들었던 대표팀을 떠나게 됐다.

박지성은 "무엇보다 나를 대신할 눈부신 성장세에 있는 선수들에게 길을 열어줘 야 한다는 생각을 했다"며 "이번 아시안컵을 통해 구자철(제주), 지동원(전남), 손흥민(함부르크) 등 능력과 열정은 물론 잠재력을 보여준 후배들의 존재를 확인할 수 있었다"

그는 또 "21살 때던 2002년 한일월드컵을 계기로 성장할 수 있었던 것을 생각해 보면 세대교체를 통해 후배들에게 좋은 기회를 주는 것은 필요하다"며 대표팀 은퇴 이유를 설명했다.

박지성은 이어 "내가 주장 완장을 놓더라도 역할을 훌륭하게 수행할 수 있는 선 배와 동료가 많아 무리가 없다고 생각한다"며 "누가 주장을 맡더라도 대표팀 내의 소통과 응집력에는 변함이 없을 것이다"고 말했다.

박지성은 특히 "오늘 대표팀 은퇴를 발표를 통해 대한민국 축구 대표팀이 뛰는 그라운드를 떠나겠지만 다른 방향을 통해 도움을 줄 수 있도록 새롭게 도전하겠다"며 "설사 그 도전이 지금보다 더 힘들고 험한 여정을 가야할 지라도 포기하지 않고 성취하도록 하겠다"고 강조했다.
