Police watch for sex trafficking ahead of Super Bowl

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - As thousands of football fans descend on Texas for Sunday's Super Bowl, law enforcement agencies are keeping watch for a different kind of out-of-town visitor: pimps selling children for sex.

Cities that host the big game often attract a bustling sex trade. This year, Texas authorities and advocacy groups are stepping up their anti-prostitution efforts, especially where young girls are concerned.

"Most people don't know that our children are being brutalized this way, and we have to stop it," said Deena Graves, founder of Traffick911, a Texas organization that launched the "I'm Not Buying It" campaign for Super Bowl XLV. "We need to get mad. We need to get angry about what's happening to our kids right here."

For weeks, volunteers have been canvassing neighbourhoods in Dallas and other cities, distributing door hangars and posters with information. Others have placed coasters in restaurants and bars. Traffick911 has also made public-service announcements, some featuring current and former NFL players.

"As a man and as a father of two beautiful girls, I'm not buying it — and neither should you," Dallas Cowboys player Jay Ratliff says in one television ad. "If you're one of these men buying these young girls, I'm telling you that real men don't buy children. They don't buy sex."

Pimps hawking young girls see the thousands of men who travel to the Super Bowl each year as a gold mine of potential clients. Police in and around host cities have tried for years to crack down on prostitution by conducting stings or increasing patrols during Super Bowl week. Only in recent years have underage girls come to light in increasing numbers.

"This is a very large issue. We want people to know what human trafficking looks like," said Thomas Lawrence, an assistant Dallas police chief. Last year's Super Bowl in Miami drew as many as 10,000 prostitutes, including children and human trafficking victims, police said.

美텍사스, 슈퍼볼 매춘 경계령

    (애틀랜타=연합뉴스) -- 미국 프로풋볼(NFL)의 최종 승자를 가리는 슈퍼볼 경기가 6일 텍사스주 알링턴에서 열릴 예정인 가운데 검찰 당국이 슈퍼볼을 전후로 기승을 부리는 아동매춘에 대한 본격적인 경계에 들어갔다.

    피츠버그 스틸러스와 그린베이 패커스가 맞붙는 제45회 슈퍼볼은 6일 저녁 텍사스주 알링턴 카우보이스 스타디움에서 열리는데 역대 슈퍼볼은 미 전역의 아동매춘 조직들이 `원정'까지 하며 `거리매춘'도 불사하는 대목으로 불려왔다.

    그렉 애보트 텍사스주 검찰총장은 1일 `유에스에이(USA) 투데이'와의 인터뷰에서 "슈퍼볼은 지구상에서 가장 위대한 축제이기도 하지만 한편으로는 미국내에서 단일 이벤트로는 가장 규모가 큰 인신매매의 장이라는 오명도 함께 갖고 있다"고 말했다.

    슈퍼볼 경기를 전후로 미 전역에서 수천명의 매춘여성들이 경기장 인근으로 몰려들어 슈퍼볼 관람차 온 수만명의 관광객들을 상대로 거리매춘을 하는 경우가 많은데 이중에는 12살 정도의 아동들도 많다는게 검찰의 설명.

    한 예로 작년에 슈퍼볼이 열린 마이애미에서는 아동보호단체들에 의해 거리에서매춘을 하던 미성년자 16명이 적발되기도 했다.

    또 2009년 슈퍼볼이 열린 플로리다주 탬파에서도 생활정보 사이트인 `크레이그리스트'를 통해 아동매춘을 시도하던 남성 2명이 적발돼 기소되기도 했다.

    올해 슈퍼볼은 특히 멕시코와 1천200마일에 걸쳐 국경을 접하고 있는 텍사스주에서 열리게 됨에 따라 미국 뿐 아니라 멕시코 등 국제적인 매춘조직도 원정에 나설 가능성이 높아 주 사법당국은 긴장의 강도를 높이고 있다.

    텍사스주 검찰당국은 이에 따라 경기가 열리는 알링턴은 물론 메트로 댈러스 지역에서 본격적인 매춘단속을 벌이기로 하고, 연방 수사국(FBI)은 물론 지역 경찰당국과 공조체제를 본격적으로 가동하고 있다

    FBI는 특히 슈퍼볼을 전후로 대테러작전과 슈퍼볼 관람권 사기예방은 물론 아동인신매매를 집중 단속키로 하고, 오스틴 등 다른 도시 지역에서 요원들을 차출하는 한편, 아동보호단체들과 공동으로 아동매춘 추방 캠페인도 전개중이다.

    미국에서는 현재 매년 10만-30만명의 아동들이 인신매매로 착취를 당하고 있는것으로 분석되고 있다.
