Olympic torch may travel into space

The next Winter Olympic Games’ torch relay is to be the longest one ever, if Russia’s bold plan is realized.

Russia, the host of 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, is now in the beginning stages of extending the Olympic torch ceremony to the International Space Station.

Vitaly Davydov, deputy head of the Russian Federation Space Agency, said that such a project was “interesting” and “theoretically possible,” according to RIA Novosti news agency. However, he also added that there are still many issues to be solved, not least that the ISS prohibits flames for safety reasons.

Also, in order to make the stunt happen, the permission of all ISS partners would be required, the report said.
