심장 붙이는 슈퍼 접착제 개발

수술 시 심장에서 떨어져 나온 일부 조직들을 서로 붙이거나, 심장의 출혈을 막아 주는 일명 슈퍼 접착제가 개발되어 화제가 되고 있다. 미국의 한 연구팀은 달팽이의 끈적끈적한 점액을 주성분으로 개발한 이 새로운 접착제가 기존의 심장 및 내장, 혈관 수술에서 사용되었던 실과 바늘을 대체할 것이라고 말했다.

앞서 돼지를 통한 임상 실험 결과, 슈퍼 접착제는 심장 자체의 내부 압력에도 불구하고 심장을 순식간에 봉합하는 데 성공했다. 따라서 향후 2년 내에 사람의 심장 수술에도 적용될 전망이다. 한편, 이 팀에서 개발 중인 피부 접착제는 머지않아 상처를 꿰매는 데에 사용될 예정이다.

Medical glue ‘for broken heart bleeding’

A superglue that can patch heart defects on the operating table or stop bleeding on the battlefield has been developed, according to the BBC.

The research team in the U.S. revealed that the new glue may eventually substitute for stitches and staples during heart, stomach or blood vessel surgery, the broadcaster said.

It said tests on pigs show it can seal cardiac defects in seconds and withstand the forces inside the heart. The glue, an application of the sticking abilities of slugs, could be available for human use in two years, according to the team.
