“Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austin was given the honor of being the nation’s favorite piece of classical literature according to a survey by Kyobo Book Center, the country’s biggest bookseller.

The result came as South Korea welcomed more silver-screen and musical adaptations of classical literature involving well-known titles such as “The Great Gatsby, “Les Miserables” and “Resurrection.”

In the survey, “The Catcher in the Rye” by J. D. Salinger was ranked second and Hermann Hesse’s “Demian” third. Nikos Kazantzakis’ “Zorba the Greek” and Scott Fitzerald’s “The Great Gatsby” came in fourth and fifth, respectively.

According to Kyobo, “The Catcher in the Rye” was picked as the most popular literature five times in the last 10 years. “Pride and Prejudice” and “Demian” were selected twice during that period.

The bookseller’s bestseller list was topped by “The Great Gatsby” as of May 31.

Kyobo said it has analyzed 731 books from 43 different countries, noting that more people are paying attention to British and American novels in recent months.
