The rise of ordinary places

On Wednesday afternoon, 23-year-old university student Kim Eun-young and her friend Lee Ha-young strolled the narrow alleys of Chebu-dong in Jongno-gu, Seoul.

They had a meal at the Tongin traditional market and sipped coffee while looking around the neighborhood, busily taking pictures.

Instead of high-rises, the neighborhood is crammed with one- or two-story buildings, many in an early 20th century-style.

The interior is decorated in European styles, with mostly bare wood or white and pastel shades.

“We sometimes hang around here. You get to see the old house, little alleys with pretty products. The photos come out pretty and the prices aren’t so expensive, which makes the place quite attractive,” Kim said.

“We first visited after reading blog postings depicting it as a hot spot. When you hear that kind of thing you need to be there, feel that atmosphere and be there to eat that food in the photo. I like being part of a big trend.”

Like Kim, thousands of people are now flocking to the places that were less popular in the past. While many tourists and Koreans still enjoy hanging at the conventional hot spots like Myeong-dong, Gangnam Station area, Garosugil or Hongdae, increasing numbers of Seoulites are beginning to seek out places that are trendy without being too familiar or popular.

When big-data analyst firm Tapa Cross studied a total of 130,000 articles on social media late last year, Seochon, Gyeongnidan-gil and Yeonnam-dong districts emerged as the next “happening places.”

각광 받는 평범한 장소들

수요일 오후 23살 대학생 김은영씨와 그녀의 친구 이하영씨가 서울 종로구 제부동의 좁은 골목길을 거닐었다.

이들은 전통시장인 통인시장에서 식사하고 동네를 둘러보면서 커피를 홀짝홀짝 마시며 부지런히 사진을 찍었다.

그 동네는 고층건물은 없고 대신 2-3층짜리 낮은 건물이 즐비한데 대부분 20세기 초 양식으로 지어졌다.

내부는 유럽풍으로 대부분 원목이나 흰색과 파스텔 칼라의 블라인드로 장식돼 있다.

김은영씨는 “가끔 여기에 온다. 오래 된 집, 예쁜 상품들이 있는 작은 골목들을 구경한다. 사진을 찍으면 예쁘게 나오고 물가도 비싼 편이 아니어서 이 곳에 끌린다”고 말했다.

“이 곳을 떠오르는 명소로 묘사한 블로그 글들을 보고 이 곳을 처음 방문했다. 그런 식의 말을 들으면 직접 가서 분위기를 느끼고 사진에 나온 음식을 먹어볼 필요가 있다. 나는 큰 추세를 따라가는 걸 좋아한다.”

김은영씨처럼 수많은 사람들이 과거에는 인기가 적었던 장소들로 몰리고 있다. 많은 관광객들과 국내인들이 여전히 명동, 강남, 가로수길, 홍대 같은 전통적인 명소를 찾지만 너무 익숙하거나 인기가 많진 않아도 현재 뜨는 장소를 찾는 서울 사람들은 늘어나는 추세다.

빅데이터 분석업체 타파크로스가 지난 해말 SNS에 올라온 총 13만건의 글들을 조사한 결과 서촌, 경리단길, 연남동이 다음에 “끝내 줄 지역”으로 부상했다.
