Another satellite set to plunge to Earth

A German astronomy satellite is set to plunge uncontrolled back to Earth in late in October, or early in November, CBS reported.

This comes just days after the 20-year-old Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite entered Earth's atmosphere and plunged into the southern Pacific Ocean.

While slightly smaller than UARS - the craft weighs 2 ½ tons - the German satellite is expected to have more pieces that survive re-entry, according to the report.

Citing the German space agency, the report puts the odds of somebody somewhere on Earth being hurt by its satellite at 1-in-2,000 - a slightly higher level of risk than was calculated for the NASA satellite. But any one individual's odds of being struck are 1-in-14 trillion, given there are 7 billion people on the planet.

인공위성 또 추락..10월말-11월초

사용연한이 지 난 독일의 인공위성이 내달 말이나 11월 초 지구로 추락할 것이라고 미국 방송 CBS 가 27일(현지시간) 보도했다.

독일의 뢴트겐스트라렌 위성(ROSAT)은 무게가 미국의 초고층대기관측위성(UARS) 보다 가벼운 2.5t이지만, 대기권에 재진입할 때는 UARS보다 더 많은 파편 형태가 될 것으로 예상된다고 CBS가 전했다.

방송에 따르면 ROSAT는 고에너지 방사선을 연구할 목적으로 제작돼 1990년 발사 된 뒤 1998년 사용연한이 끝났다.

독일 우주항공국은 ROAST가 지구 대기권에 재진입할 때는 전체 무게가 2t이 안 되는 30개 파편으로 흩어질 것으로 예상하고 있다.

파편 가운데는 날카로운 거울 조각도 포함될 가능성이 있다.

독일 우주항공국은 ROAST의 추락으로 지구 상에서 누군가 다칠 확률을 2천분의 1로 예상했는데 이는 미 항공우주국(NASA)이 6t 무게의 UARS 추락 시 예상한 확률 3 천200분의 1보다 다소 높은 것이다.

하지만, 세계인구를 70억 명으로 계산했을 때 ROAST 추락으로 각 개인이 피해를 볼 확률은 14조분의 1이라고 CBS가 전했다.

NASA 관리들은 이날 독일도 미국처럼 운이 좋다면 ROAST가 육지에서 아주 멀리 떨어진 "이상적인" 장소에 추락할 것이라고 말했다.

한편, 미 공군 당국이 UARS의 추락 지점을 새로 계산한 결과 북아메리카 대륙의 북서쪽에서 수천 마일 떨어진 바다에 떨어진 것으로 추정됐다고 CBS가 전했다.
