South Korea's ICT ministry said Tuesday it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Ghana to assist the African nation with building a technology infrastructure.

The agreement, signed during the 19th International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference being held here from Monday, is an extension of South Korea's official development assistance (ODA) to Ghana for IT projects. In 2008, South Korea provided digital multimedia broadcasting devices, and last year, it helped establish a software base in the African nation.

"The information security and authentication technology is the key to an Internet-ridden economy as well as the bilateral relationship of the two," said ICT Minister Choi Yang-hee. "We will give full-fledged support to local firms that wish to assist in projects for Ghana."

The ministry said it hopes for the MOU to be an opportunity to promote high-end technologies of South Korea's small and medium-scale firms in the African market. (Yonhap)
