Former teacher dedicates 30 years to charity work

As volunteers of all ages, occupations and causes lined up wearing Korean Red Cross uniforms and chef hats at the headquarters in Jongno, central Seoul, one instructor taught them the steps of splitting the dough to make cream cakes.
Hours later, sponge cakes and sweet bread came out from the oven. Looking at their warm, puffy creations, the cooks beamed as they imagined them being doled out to those in need, a daily routine for the volunteer workers.
Standing among them was Yoon Kyung-ae, an 83-year-old volunteer who has become a familiar face at the Korean Red Cross, with which she has been working together for the past three decades every day.
The start of her voluntary work was nothing more than a coincidence.
“I still remember the first day. It was Oct. 10, 1986 right after I retired from teaching. My friend asked me if I would join a Japanese class held at the Korean Red Cross’ office. That was the beginning,” said the former middle school teacher.
While learning Japanese at the office, Yoon gradually opened her eyes to voluntary work. She joined the organization with an aim of dedicating the rest of her life to others, she said.
Her first voluntary job was offering assistance at an information desk at Seoul Red Cross Hospital. Her job gradually broadened to guiding visitors to operation rooms and assisting pharmacists at the hospital’s pharmacy. She mainly helped distinguishing and sorting pills.
The work experiences at the hospital presented many fruitful memories to her, she said.
“One day, a man urgently looked for a particular doctor. I guided him to the doctor and luckily he was able to receive the surgery that he needed. I cared for him until he left the hospital. A few days later, the man visited me to express gratitude with a box of sweet potatoes. He was a sweet potato farmer,” she said with laugh. “Since then, we have become friends and we still keep in touch. He still sends me a box of sweet potatoes every year.”

전직 교사 자선 활동에 30년 헌신

모든 나이, 직업, 신조를 아우르는 자원봉사자들이 대한적십자사 유니폼을 입고 요리사 모자를 쓴 채 서울 종로 본부에 모여 정렬하자 한 강사가 그들에게 빵 반죽을 갈라 크림 케이크를 만드는 절차를 가르쳤다.
몇 시간 후 오븐으로부터 스폰지 케이크와 달콤한 빵이 완성되어 나왔다. 부어 오른 따뜻한 빵들을 바라보던 자원봉사 요리사들은 자신들이 매일 하는 일이긴 하지만 그 빵을 불우이웃들에게 나눠주는 상상을 하며 활짝 웃었다.
그 곳에 모인 자원봉사자들 중에 대한적십자사에서 낯익은 얼굴인 83살 윤경애 할머니가 서 있었다. 윤 할머니는 30년 동안 매일매일 대한적십자사와 함께 일해왔다.
그녀가 자원봉사 활동을 시작하게 된 것은 우연이었다.
중학교 교사 출신인 윤 할머니는 “처음으로 인연을 맺은 날이 지금도 기억난다. 그 날은 교사로서 은퇴한 직후인 1986년 10월 10일이었다. 한 친구가 나보고 대한적십자사 사옥에서 하는 일본어 강좌를 듣지 않겠냐고 물었는데 그게 시작이었다”고 회상했다.
윤 할머니는 대한적십자사에서 일본어를 배우면서 서서히 자원봉사에 눈을 떴다. 그녀는 남은 인생을 다른 사람들에게 헌신할 목적으로 대한적십자사 봉사대원이 됐다고 말했다.
그녀가 처음 맡은 봉사 업무는 서울적십자병원 안내 데스크에서 도움을 주는 일이었다. 그녀의 업무는 방문자를 수술실로 안내하고 병원의 약 조제실에서 약사를 돕는 일로 점차 확대됐다. 주로 알약을 구분하고 분류하는 일을 도왔다.
그녀는 병원 자원봉사 덕분에 보람 있는 기억이 많이 생겼다고 밝혔다.
윤 할머니는 “어느 날 한 남자가 어떤 의사를 긴급히 찾았습니다. 나는 그 남자를 그 의사에게 안내했고 다행히 그는 필요한 수술을 받을 수 있었습니다. 그가 퇴원할 때까지 그를 보살폈습니다. 며칠 후 그 남자가 고구마 한 상자를 들고 나를 찾아와 감사를 표했습니다. 그는 고구마 농사를 짓는 농부였습니다”라고 웃으며 말했다. “이후 우리는 친구가 됐고 지금까지 연락하며 지내고 있습니다. 그 친구는 여전히 나에게 해마다 고구마 한 상자를 보냅니다.”
