SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) -- Amazon launched their answer to the smartphone earlier this summer to much fanfare. Touting features other phones don't have, like Firefly that will allow users to photograph barcodes on products instantly placing them on a shopping list. Firefly can even recognize music, movies, artwork on a wall and even TV shows.

Fast-forward a few months, and Amazon has slashed the price of it's much lauded phone to .99 cents. That price is with a two-year contract with AT&T, the exclusive carrier of the Fire. It also comes with a year of Amazon Prime.

The reason for the price slash: the phone hasn't sold that well.

According to an article in the New York Times, some AT&T stores in the San Francisco area have only sold a few phones.

On Monday, Amazon said customers who bought it early should contact customer service for a refund. However, those customers who bought it straight from AT&T may be out of luck, the wireless provider has a 14 day return policy.
