1. 세금 체납 외국인, 비자 연장 어려워 진다

다음 달부터 지방세를 내지 않은 외국인은 체류 기간 연장을 위한 비자 발급이 어려워진다. 국내에 체류하는 외국인은 차량을 보유했거나 소득이 있으면 지방세를 낸다. 하지만, 세금을 내지 않아도 체류 비자 연장 등에 불이익이 없다 보니 일부 외국인은 이를 악용한다. 현재 국내 체류 외국인의 지방세 체납액은 100억 원이 넘는다고 한다.

Korea to stop visa extension for foreign tax defaulters

[1] Foreign residents who have unpaid local taxes will be denied an extension of their visas starting in May, the government said Monday.

[2] Under an information sharing pact of the Justice Ministry, the National Tax Service and the Korea Customs Service, immigration offices nationwide will check the tax payment history of every foreigner who applies for a visa extension and reject the request if the person has a tax default.

[3] The program will start with 16 immigration offices on May 1, gradually expanding to 20 by July and all of 38 offices by next year.

2. 인터넷으로 모든 걸 배우는 시대

최근 미국 오하이오주에서 한 8살 아이가 유튜브를 통해 운전을 배운 뒤 부모 몰래 자동차를 운전해 맥도날드를 다녀오는 일이 발생했다. 이 아이는 교통규범을 모두 준수하며 흠 잡을 데 없이 운전해 모두를 놀라게 했다. 이처럼 인터넷을 통한 정보의 홍수 속에서 스스로 각종 지식을 수집할 수 있는 시대가 열렸다.
