The prize was given during Global Insurance Forum 2018 held from Sunday through Wednesday at the InterContinental Hotel in Germany. Since 1997, the IIS has recognized over 60 academics in insurance with Shin Research Excellence Award.

Shin Research Excellence Award was named after Shin Yong-ho, founder of Seoul-based Kyobo Life Insurance and only Korean to be enshrined in Insurance Hall of Fame. Shin Chang-jae, eldest son of late Shin and chief executive of Kyobo Life, attended the forum in Berlin and the awarding ceremony.
