Korea and Britain reaffirmed their commitment to closely work together to strengthen their ties and seek policy coordination in diverse areas ranging from the economy to North Korea and human rights issues, the foreign ministry said Tuesday.
The agreement was reached at a meeting between Kim Hyoung-zhin, deputy foreign minister, and British Minister of State Hugo Swire in London on Monday (local time), according to the ministry.
"Both sides reaffirmed their stance that they will push to minimize the impact that the recent decision by the Britons to leave the European Union could have on their bilateral relations, while maintaining close coordination in such areas as North Korea's nuclear and human rights issues," the ministry said in a press release.
During his stay in London, Kim also met with chiefs of local major think tanks and exchanged views on global and regional situations in the wake of Britain's move to exit the EU.
The deputy minister's visit to Britain marked the first of its kind by a high-ranking government official from South Korea since the so-called Brexit decision on June 23.
"(The meeting) is deemed a useful opportunity to reaffirm the strong commitment of the governments of the two countries to deepen their friendly ties and strengthen (policy) coordination on North Korea," the ministry said. (Yonhap)
