Guinness World Records has declared that a huge crocodile blamed for deadly attacks in the southern Philippines is the largest in captivity in the world. The giant reptile has brought pride, fear, tourism revenues and attention to the remote town where it was captured.

The saltwater crocodile named Lolong, which was captured last September in Bunawan town in Agusan del Sur province, measures 20.24 feet (6.17 meters) and weighs more than a ton, Guinness spokeswoman Anne-Lise Rouse said in a statement seen Sunday. The reptile took the top spot from an Australian crocodile which measured more than 17 feet (5 meters) and weighed nearly a ton.

Bunawan Mayor Edwin Cox Elorde said the news sparked celebrations in his farming town of 37,000 but also fostered concerns that more giant crocodiles might be lurking in a nearby marshland and creek where villagers fish.

"There were mixed feelings," Elorde said by telephone. "We're really proud because it proves the rich biodiversity of our place but at the same time, there are fears that Lolong may not be alone."

Lolong has become the star attraction of a new ecotourism park and research center in the outskirts of Bunawan and has drawn thousands of tourists since news of its capture spread. Elorde said his town has earned 3 million pesos ($72,000) from the modest entrance fees at the park, with most of the money being used to feed and care for the crocodile and for park maintenance. 지난해 필리핀에서 잡힌 거대 살인악어 ‘로롱’이 ‘사로잡힌 가장 큰 악어’로 기네스북에 올랐다.

지난 11월 아구산 델 수르 지방의 부나완 마을에서 잡힌 이 악어는 몸길이가 무려 6.17 미터에 달하고 몸무게가 1톤이 넘게 나가 소형 트럭의 크기와 비슷하다. 로롱은 3년전 아이가 죽고 어부 한 사람이 실종되자 그 원인으로 지목되어 두려움의 대상이 되었다.

마을 사람들은 거대한 로롱을 잡기 위해 3주 동안이나 추격적을 계속했다고 한다. 결국 그들은 악어를 덫에 몰아넣는데 성공했고, 100명이나 되는 사람들이 힘을 합쳐 로롱을 끌어내는데 성공했다.

마을 사람들은 부나완 마을까지 와서 함께 악어를 잡으러 갔다가 심장마비로 목숨을 잃은 환경담당 공무원의 이름을 따서 악어를 로롱이라 이름 지었다고 밝혔다.

산 채로 사로잡힌 악어는 부나완 마을 외곽 쪽의 생태관광 공원에 전시되었고, 지역의 명물 중 하나로 자리잡았다. 부나완 시장 에드윈 엘로드 씨는 악어를 보러 수천 명이나 되는 사람들이 몰려드는데, 이들이 내는 입장료의 대부분은 악어 먹이값으로 나간다고 설명했다.

그러나 로롱이 잡혔음에도 악어의 공포는 사라지지 않았다. 로롱이 잡힐 당시 더 큰 악어가 탈출하는 것이 목격됐기 때문.

엘로드는 이 악어를 잡기 위해 사냥 팀을 꾸려놓고 정부의 허가를 기다리는 중이라고 밝혔다.
