Researchers at Cornell University in New York say they have developed a less intrusive method of determining whether someone is sexually aroused.

While most previous work on what turns people on has involved measuring their genital responses, Gerulf Rieger, a researcher at Cornell, said measuring dilation or widening of the pupil in the eye can achieve the same goal, HealthDay reports. In fact, Rieger suggested in a paper published in the journal PloS One that data gathered from studying eye response might be more sensitive.

For example, Rieger said, straight men respond to sexual videos of women and not of men, while women respond to videos of both genders. Previous research has suggested women have a somewhat different sexual response than men.

But the team also found a range of responses in men who identify as mostly straight and those who say they are bisexual. Researchers had believed bisexual men's identity was not rooted in their sexual response, but the team found this is untrue.

"We can now finally argue that a flexible sexual desire is not simply restricted to women -- some men have it, too, and it is reflected in their pupils," Ritch Savin-Williams, a professor in human development and co-author of the paper, said. "In fact, not even a division into 'straight,' 'bi,' and 'gay' tells the full story. Men who identity as 'mostly straight' really exist both in their identity and their pupil response; they are more aroused to males than straight men, but much less so than both bisexual and gay men." 사람들이 특정 대상에게 성적으로 관심을 갖는지 여부를 눈을 관찰하는 것만으로 알 수 있다는 연구결과가 나왔다.

미국 코넬 대학이 최근 발표한 연구에 따르면 동공의 확장 여부 등을 살피는 것만으로도 성적으로 자극을 받았는지 여부를 알 수 있다고 한다.

기존에는 신체적인 반응을 관찰해야 성적 흥분 여부를 알 수 있다는 가설이 지배적이었으나, 연구진은 눈의 반응을 살피면 더 세심한 관찰이 가능하다고 주장했다.

연구진은 먼저 자신을 각각 이성애자, 동성애자, 양성애자 등으로 구분한 남녀에게 성적인 내용이 담긴 영상을 보여주고 반응을 관찰했다.

그 결과 이성애 성향을 가진 남성은 여성의 영상에만 반응하고 남성의 영상에는 반응하지 않았다. 반면 여성의 경우 남녀의 영상에 모두 반응하는 것으로 관찰했는데 이는 ‘여성이 남성과 성적으로 다르게 반응하는 경향이 있다’라는 기존의 연구결과에 부합하는 것이었다.

그러나 이런 식의 유연한 성적 반응은 여성뿐 아니라 남성들에게서도 관찰되었다.

실험 참가자 중 자신이 ‘거의 이성애자’라고 답한 남성의 경우, 남성의 성적인 영상을 볼 때에 어느 정도 반응을 보인 것으로 관찰되었다. 이들의 반응은 양성애자의 반응보다는 작았지만, 전혀 반응을 보이지 않은 이성애자들보다는 컸다.
