S. Korean embassy in China apparently hit by air gun round

The South Korean Embassy in Beijing was apparently hit by an air gun shot earlier this week amid growing tensions over the killing of a South Korean Coast Guard officer by a Chinese fisherman, sources said Wednesday.

Chinese authorities launched an investigation soon after the incident took place on Tuesday afternoon, and discovered a metal ball that had apparently cracked a window in the building, the sources said on condition of anonymity.

The apparent attack caused no casualties.

The metal ball was likely fired from an air gun, as no one testified to hearing a gunshot, the sources said.

The incident came one day after a Chinese fisherman stabbed a South Korean Coast Guard officer to death during a crackdown on illegal fishing in the Yellow Sea. The killing sparked large-scale protests involving more than 300 people in front of the Chinese embassy in Seoul on Tuesday.

It was the second time a South Korean Coast Guard officer was killed in violent clashes with Chinese fishermen, while many others have sustained injuries. Seoul has strongly protested the violence and demanded appropriate action from Beijing.

The South Korean embassy in Beijing would not comment on whether the apparent air gun pellet could have been fired by a Chinese national who had been provoked by the protests in Seoul. (Yonhap News)

주중 韓대사관, 공기총 추정 쇠구슬 피격

중국 베이징(北京) 소재 한국 대사 관에 공기총 공격으로 추정되는 쇠구슬이 날아들어 중국 공안당국이 수사에 나섰다.

문제의 사건은 현지시간으로 13일 오후 5시께 발생했다.

외부에서 날아든 쇠구슬 때문에 대사관 내부 경제동(棟)의 대형 방탄 유리창에 금이 갔다.

사건 직후 베이징 차오양(朝陽)구 공안국이 출동해 진상조사를 벌였으며 현장에 서 쇠구슬을 거둬 간 것으로 알려졌다.

사건 발생 당시 총기의 격발음이 들리지 않았고 쇠구슬의 형태로 볼 때 공기총 탄일 가능성이 큰 것으로 전해졌다.

중국에서도 민간인의 총기보유를 불법이지만 수렵용 공기총은 허가되고 있다.

주중 한국대사관 측은 문제의 쇠구슬이 사람을 겨냥했으면 치명적인 상해를 입 힐 수 있다는 점에 주목하고 있다. 주중 한국대사관 개관 이래 이런 피격 사건은 처 음이다.

중국 공안당국은 일단 깨진 유리창의 상태를 면밀하게 조사해 어느 방향에서 문 제의 쇠구슬이 날아들었는지와 누가, 어떤 목적으로 피격했는지를 면밀하게 조사하 고 있다.

이 사건은 지난 12일 서해상에서 불법조업을 하던 중국 어선의 선장이 한국 해 양경찰관을 흉기로 살해한 사건이 발생해 중국에 대한 한국 국민의 감정이 악화하는 가운데 발생해 관심이 쏠리고 있다.

실제 중국 선원의 한국 해경 살해사건 발생 이틀째인 13일 서울 효자동 주한 중 국대사관 앞에서 라이트 코리아, 대한민국고엽제전후회, 대한민국재경향우회 등의 보수단체 회원 300여명이 규탄 집회를 벌였다.

이 집회 과정에서 중국 국기를 불태우려는 시도가 있었으며 달걀을 대사관에 던 지는 등의 과잉행동이 빚어지면서 경찰관 충돌을 빚었다. 승용차 한 대가 주한 중국 대사관으로 돌진하려다 가로막고 있던 경찰 버스의 측면을 들이받기도 했다.

일각에서는 이런 한국 내의 중국 규탄 분위기가 인터넷을 통해 실시간으로 중국 에 전해지면서 이에 격분한 중국인이 공기총을 이용해 주중 한국대사관을 공격한 것 아니냐는 분석도 나오고 있다.

이와 관련해 주중 한국대사관은 일절 확인하지 않고 있다.
