British officials say their investigation of why a smartphone caught fire and left an 11-year-old boy's legs burned and permanently scarred is a priority.

The family is now demanding the popular BlackBerry Curve 9320 mobile is recalled from shops in time for Christmas.

Pete and Sarah McCreath say they are seeking the BlackBerry Curve 9320 smartphone recalled from British stores before Christmas after a BlackBerry device malfunctioned and spontaneously combusted, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Sarah McCreath said the phone had worked fine for a week, but last Sunday she placed the charging phone in the her son's bedroom because it was used as an alarm, but after the family fell asleep, she heard a loud "pop" and then her son screaming that his legs were on fire. She said she put out the fire by using a comforter.

영국에서 스마트폰이 폭발해 한 소년이 중상을 입는 사고가 일어났다.

UPI통신, 데일리 텔레그래프 등 외신은 지난달 25일 (현지시간) 웨스트미들랜즈주 코번트리의 한 가정집에서 ‘블랙베리 커브 932’ 휴대전화가 폭발해 11세 소년이 다리에 심한 화상을 입었다고 보도했다.

피해자 소년의 부모인 피터와 새러 멕크리스 부부는 사고 당시 아들의 방에 휴대전화를 놓아두고 잠이 들었다. 그러나 한 밤중에 커다란 ‘펑’ 소리와 함께 아이가 ‘다리에 불이 붙었다’고 비명을 지르기 시작했고, 새러 씨는 급히 아이의 방에 들어와 이불로 불을 꺼야 했다.

새러 씨는 “만약 아이가 일어나지 않았다면 훨씬 더 끔찍한 사건이 일어났을 수도 있습니다. 만약 내가 휴대전화를 층계참에 놓았다면 집이 전소했을 수도 있고요”라고 말하며 휴대전화가 이러한 재앙을 가져올 것이라고는 상상도 못했다고 말했다.

“제 아들은 죽었을 수도 있습니다. 어떤 일이 일어났었을까 상상하면 소름이 끼칩니다”라고 그녀는 덧붙였다.

멕크리스 부부는 폭발 원인 규명을 당국에 요청하는 한편, 폭발한 휴대폰 기종을 다가오는 크리스마스 전까지 전량 리콜해야 한다고 주장했다. (코리아헤럴드)
