WASHINGTON (Yonhap News) -- The United States government reaffirmed Friday that it has no hostile intent towards North Korea as it seeks peace and stability on the peninsula.

"As a matter of longstanding policy, the United States is committed to the maintenance of peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and has no hostile intent toward the DPRK," a State Department spokesperson said on the customary condition of anonymity.

DPRK stands for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, North Korea's official name.

The official was responding to a North Korean foreign ministry statement that it will "totally reexamine the nuclear issue,' hinting that it may avert its earlier announcement that it has no immediate plans for a nuclear test.

Pyongyang also accused South Korea and the United States of attempting to demolish statues of its founding leader, Kim Il-sung, in North Korea near the Chinese border, citing testimony from a North Korean defector, Jon Yong-chol.

Jon, who has returned to the North, claimed earlier this week that he took part in the plot in return for the promise of money from South Korean and U.S. authorities.

The State Department urged Pyongyang to discontinue threats.

"We believe strongly that North Korea will achieve nothing by threats or provocations; such behavior will only continue to isolate the country and provide no real opportunity for engagement with the international community," the official said. "We continue to call on North Korea to adhere to its international obligations, including all relevant UN Security Council Resolutions and human rights conventions.”


美 "북한에 적대 의지 없다"..유엔결의 준수 촉구

미국 정부는 20일(현지시간) "우리는 한반도의 평화와 안정 유지에 주력하고 있으며, 북한(DPRK)에 대해 적대 의지를 갖고 있지 않다"고 밝혔다.

미 국무부는 이날 북한 외무성이 김일성 동상을 파손하려다가 체포됐다고 주장한 탈북자 전영철씨의 기자회견과 관련해 "제반 상황은 우리로 하여금 핵문제를 전면적으로 재검토하지 않을 수 없게 하고 있다"고 밝힌 것에 대해 논평해달라는 연합뉴스의 질의에 대변인 명의로 이같이 밝혔다.

국무부는 또 "우리는 북한이 위협과 도발로 아무것도 성취할 수 없다고 생각하며, 그런 행위들은 오직 그들을 고립시키고 국제사회와 교류할 기회를 얻지 못하게 될 것"이라고 지적했다.

아울러 "유엔 안보리 결의 1718호와 1874호는 분명하고도 명백하게 북한으로 하여금 모든 핵무기와 잔존하는 핵 프로그램을 완전하고도 검증가능하고 돌이킬 수 없는 방식으로 폐기하도록 요구하고 있다"면서 "우리는 지속적으로 북한이 유엔 안보리 결의와 인권 규약 등 국제적 의무사항을 준수할 것을 촉구한다"고 덧붙였다.

조선중앙통신에 따르면 외무성 대변인은 이날 성명을 통해 "미국의 구태의연한 대조선 적대시정책으로 조선반도에서는 대결과 긴장 격화의 악순환이 되풀이되고 조선반도 비핵화도 더욱 요원해지고 있다"며 '핵 전면 재검토' 입장을 밝혔다.
